Suriname (1st) and Brazil (2nd) qualify for the WKC 2023 | IKF PAKC 2022

The 24 participants of  the IKF World Korfball Championship 2023 are known at the end of this IKF Pan-American Korfball Championship 2022, the last qualifying event that took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 18 to 20 December 2022.

Brazil, Suriname and Argentina were the 3 South-American countries competing in this qualifying tournament for the last two spots in next year’s WKC, plus a 4th local team playing out of competition.

The decisive game took place on Day 3, in the semi-final between Argentina and Brazil. Both teams had the same points in the ranking, and Suriname was already waiting in the final after winning all its matches during the 1st round.

Argentina beat Brazil 11-10 on Day 2, so the winner of this semi-final match would get the last spot to attend next year’s World Championship. After an intense game, the Brazilians showed their experience in this kind of games and took control from the very beginning. They leaded and controlled the game at all times, becoming the winners of the game (9-14) and reaching the precious final.

The last match for 1st place between Brazil and Suriname was clearly dominated by the current PAKC 2018 champions, who revalidated its throne after an overwhelming win by 2-14.

The IKF wants to thank the Argentinian Korfball Federation for hosting this PAKC 2022, and to all participants, volunteers and officials for this great 3 days of competition.

Daily live scores and matches were available on www.worldkorfball.sport website, together with all the results, statistics, play-by-play, top scorers and rankings.

Korfball in the USA

Pacific Northwest (PNW) Beach Korfball is the 1st beach korfball club in the USA, founded by a group of basketball players lead by Bill Johnson, based at Golden Gardens Park in Seattle, Washington

PNW Beach Korfball will be representing the U.S. in the first ‘IKF World Beach Korfball Championship’ in Nador, Morocco on 19 & 20 August 2022 in their first official game.

They held their first annual PNW Beach Korfball cup in 2021 with former Great Britain international player and coach Steve Barker, and over 50 adult basketball players participated, including players from New York, Oregon, California, Serbia, and the Tibetan Plateau.

Bill Jonson from PNW Beach Korfball said “We are taking things slowly at a pace that’s manageable for us. We would like to let it grow organically & naturally, and make things sustainable. We are now making connections with korfballers all over the world. Eventually, we will make Seattle a nice place to play beach korfball”.

“While the Olympics is moving towards mixed-gender sports, the coed aspect of beach korfball is the new dynamic that’s going to make social changes with sports like this, I feel cool to be part of korfball”. Ashley Graham.

The Asociacion Peruana de Korfball (Peru) joins IKF

At the General Meeting held on October 30 in Antwerp (BEL), the Asociacion Peruana de Korfball (AKOPE) joined the IKF as Associate Member. Korfball was introduced to Peru three years ago with the help of the Argentinian Korfball Aassocation, and since then AKOPE President Javier Rojas Durand has been working to develop korfball. Due to the pandemic, the first initiatives, in particular courses, have been held online, but currently korfball is being played in a number of schools. Mr Rojas Durand is an experienced sports developer, having previous introduced handball to Peru, and now focusing on our sport. Mr Jan Fransoo met with Mr Rojas Durand in 2019 during a visit to Lima, and is confident in the leadership of AKOPE to develop into a strong association in the Latin American country.

Since Belarus withdrew from the IKF at the General Meeting due to difficulties to develop korfball, the IKF currently still counts 69 member countries.

IKF Council accepts Suriname as Associate Member

The Council of the International Korfball Federation has today accepted Suriname as (Associate) Member of the International Korfball Federation. This implies the team of Suriname can participate tomorrow officially in the IKF Open European Beach Korfball Championship, due to start in The Hague.

A few final administrative matters still need to be resolved, but the Federation meets the criteria for admission based on the files submitted.

The application of Suriname is noteworthy. Korfball was played for many decades in Suriname during the time it was a Dutch colony, but after independence in 1975, formal korfball structures gradually disappeared in the Caribbean country in South America, and Suriname was expelled as member of the International Korfball Federation some years ago. However, korfball continued to be played in school without a formal federation taking care.

Following a recent initiative by former Dutch international player Gerald van Dijk. A group of players with Surinamese roots in the Netherlands revived the Federation, and formally established the Surinaamse Korfbal Federatie. The SKF plans to actively work on the development of korfball in Suriname, along with strong international competitive ambitions, as they intend to participate in next year’s IKF Panamerican Korfball Championship in Cali (Colombia) which serves as a qualification event for the 2019 IKF World Korfball Championship.
