IOC Recognizes Importance of The World Games

LAUSANNE (19/4/2016) The International World Games Association (IWGA) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) agreed on a new Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday. IOC President Dr. Thomas Bach and President José Perurena of the IWGA signed this important agreement about mutual support during the SportAccord Convention in Lausanne. This document supersedes the previous Memorandum of Understanding dated 27 October 2000.

The MoU underlines the closer cooperation between the IOC and the IWGA which was set out in Recommendation 6.1 of Olympic Agenda 2020. This states “…the IOC and the International World Games Association (IWGA) to closely cooperate regarding the sports programme composition and their respective evaluations.” The new agreement confirms that “the IOC recognises the importance of The World Games as a multi-sport event and the IWGA is committed to develop its activities in the Olympic spirit and in conformity with the Olympic Charter.”

The MoU explains the principles of how this overall cooperation can be further developed. One of these principles is that the IWGA accepts that only events that are not on the programme of the Olympic Games can be included in the programme of The World Games (TWG). The IWGA shall also ensure that only sports whose International Federations are recognised by the IOC or are already members of the IWGA will be included in the official sports programme of TWG.
The IOC agrees to grant patronage to Organising Committees of The World Games and to provide technical assistance. This means for example that the IOC and the IWGA shall explore possibilities of closer cooperation on their respective communication, promotion and marketing programmes. Furthermore, the IOC will provide its expertise and help to promote IWGA’s activities within the Olympic Movement and encourages the NOCs to support and assist their national multi-sport delegations taking part in TWG.

Part of the agreement signed on Tuesday is the assurance: “The IWGA shall continue to develop a close working relationship with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to facilitate education and testing programs, and doping controls conducted at The World Games according to the World Anti-Doping Code.”

IWGA President José Perurena said after the signing ceremony: “This Memorandum of Understanding tremendously enhances the status of The World Games. Working in cooperation with the IOC is essential for us to raise the level of competition and organization of our Games. I want to thank IOC President Dr. Thomas Bach for his enormous support and for working with on this document. It proves that we are a real part of the Olympic movement and a member of the Olympic family.”

International Korfball Federation appoints Tilbert La Haye as CEO

The International Korfball Federation has appointed Mr Tilbert La Haye as its CEO. Mr La Haye (39) is from Delft (Netherlands) and will start leading the IKF’s operations from June 1, 2016. The appointment follows approval of the IKF growth strategy by the organization’s General Meeting last November, and the subsequently started recruitment process for the IKF’s first CEO.

Mr La Haye has degrees in Physical Education and Organization and Management. He has worked as a sports teacher, professional korfball coach, and as project manager for major elite and grass roots sports events in the Netherlands, Spain, and Colombia. He joins the IKF from the City of The Hague, where he has been employed as a Senior Consultant in the Department of Sports.

IKF President Jan Fransoo: “We are very pleased with Tilbert La Haye joining our organization. He will have a key responsibility in enhancing the professionalism in the support processes in our office to increase the quality of service to the IKF volunteers and the national korfball associations, and ensuring the realization of our strategic initiatives. These include the rapid growth of korfball4 with a major event or event series on the beach or on hard court, and the initiation of a management development program for our national organizations. His enthusiasm, energy, and experience will be a major driving force for the growth of korfball”.

Tilbert La Haye: “In the last 10 years I have been involved in different levels of korfball development and performance. Everywhere I came, from Asia to South America and Europe, I was surprised by the enormous passion that people have for korfball. This passion and the great potential I see in korfball to grow, are the main reasons I take on this challenge. A great honor! I specially look forward to work together with all 67 national federations of the IKF to help to develop korfball to a stronger and more professional sport with the Olympic Games as a final destination.”

KC Barcelona: New IKF Europa Shield 2016 Champion

Congratulations to Korfbal Club Barcelona from Catalonia, the new IKF Europa Shield 2016 champion. After an excellent tournament with 5 victories in 5 games, they are the new champions after beating in the final 14-13 the 2015 winners English Bec Korfball Club.

This is the 1st time they achieve this trophy, after only two previous international participations. The 1st was two years ago in IKF Europa Cup 2014  and the 2nd last year in IKF Europa Shield 2015.

An impressive and succesful course that ended with this well deserved 1st place in IKF ES 2016. Congratulations!
