CK Vallparadis wins 2013 IKF Europa Shield

shieldimageCK Vallparadis/Assessoria confirmed Catalonia’s ranking as the top IKF Europa Shield country by winning 19 – 10 against the German team from Castrop-Rauxel. The result means that Germany have finished runners up for the past three years and the country has yet to ever win the Shield event. The bronze medal game was an all Czech affair with Brno defeating Kolin 23 – 17. Fifth place was earned by Nottingham (ENG) who beat Obudai (HUN) 20 – 11 and seventh place was won by Cascais (POR) who beat AZS Wroclaw (POL) 20 – 7.

The most exciting game of the day was the first semi-final where the eventual winners from Catalonia just squeezed past the eventual bronze medallists – Brno – by a golden goal. Henning SCHMIDT (GER) just edged out Jan SEDY (CZE) by one goal for top male scorer with 17 and Antje MENZEL (GER) was the top female scorer with 16, Berta ALOMKA SESE (CAT) being second with 12.

IKF Europa Shield – semi-finalists now known

Following Saturday’s second session the semi-finalists of the 2013 edition of the IKF Europa Shield are now known. Adler Rauxel (GER), who completed a 100% record in their pool matches following their 13 – 9 win against Cascais, will play Kolin (CZE) following the Czech club’s 8 – 17 defeat to CK Vallparadis (CAT). The other semi-final will be between CK Vallparadis, who also had a 100% record in their pool matches, and Brno (CZE) who rounded off their day with a 14 – 9 win over Obudai (HUN).

Fifth and sixth places will be between Nottingham, who won 20 – 5 against AZS Wroclaw (POL) in the day’s second session, and Obudai (HUN). Fighting it out for 7th and 8th places will be Cascais (POR) and AZS Wroclaw (POL).

Remarkably the number of goals scored in the second session was exactly the same as in the morning session – 95. The top female scorer after the pool matches is Antje MENZEL (GER) with 10, three clear of Marie MASOVA (CZE) and Yvonne WISCHNIEWSKI (GER) who led after the first day. For the men, Jan SEDY (CZE) and Jose Luis JURADO CRUZ (CAT) are top with 10 apiece.

IKF Europa Shield 2013 – Day 1

The opening day of the 2013 edition of the IKF Europa Shield saw the number 1 in each pool scheduled to play the number 3 and the number 2 to play the number 4. It looked from the opening day’s results that there will not be many surprises in this year’s event unless the lower ranked countries raise their game.

In the opening matches in each pool the higher ranked team both won by a ten goal margin. In pool B Adler Rauxel (GER) – beat Obudai (HUN) 17 – 7 whilst in pool A Kolin (CZE) beat AZS Wroclaw 19 – 9. In the other matches Brno (CZE) gained a surprising large win over Cascais (POR) by a 20 – 12 score line.

The last match of the day proved to be the closest and most exciting with 19 goals scored in the first half of the 2 x 20 minutes match, with CK Vallparadis (CAT) leading Nottingham (ENG) by five with a 12 -7 score line at half time. This was mainly due to a combination of greater accuracy in shooting and better passing, Nottingham being punished on more than one occasion due to their misplaced passes. The second half slowed in intensity and number of goals scored (only 9 in total in the whole half) and saw a mini-revival by Nottingham who, although winning the half by three goals, could not close the gap and the Catalans finally won 15 – 13.

Overall an average of 28 goals per game was achieved in each 40 minute match. Matej KUBICEK (Kolin, CZE) was top male scorer of the day with five and this total was matched by the top female scorer Yvonne WISCHNIEWSKI (Adler Rauxel, GER)
