Intense second day of IKF EKC R1 West 2016 qualification tournament in Saint Etienne. A lot happened; sometimes could have been written for a Alfred Hitchcock’s movie.
A thrilling first match between Turkey and Ireland. At a score of 6-2 in favour of Turkey one of the shot clocks gave problems. Because of this there was a “technical time out” of about 15 minutes. Kees Verhoeven used this for focussing his Irish team. On the other hand the Turkish team struggled to get back to the level they had before. Ireland came in the lead with two goals, but in the last minute with just 30 seconds on the clock the Turkish team equalised the score. Ireland won the toss for the Golden Goal, but the first ball was lost unfortunately, the Turkish team scored directly after that, so Turkey won, 10-9 GG.
Compliments for the local organisation for organising a working spare set of shot clock very soon.
France beat Sweden by 17-4. Again Catalonia showed their supremacy in a match against the Wales squad; unless their working till the last minute, 15-5.
The second part of the day was decisive for the top and the others. In their fourth match against Ireland, Sweden enjoyed the moment they were in the lead in this game (1-0), but after that it was Ireland making the difference. Ireland won, 8-17.
Turkey qualified for the final round of IKF European Korfball Championship 2016 (October, The Netherlands) in a match with two hard working teams, both searching for an effective attack. Unfortunately this searching was for both teams not very successful, therefore a low score at the end, 4-11. But enough for Turkey to qualify.
Catalonia, the team with best play shown till now: attractive, stable and fast ball play had to defeat France, this evening again supported by a large and enthusiastic audience. The French players showed their perseverance, but that was not enough to beat Catalonia. With their victory of 4-18 Catalonia gained qualification for the final round of IKF EKC 2016
Because of this in the first two matches of tomorrow will be decided the ranking for the places three till six. In the last match Catalonia and Turkey will battle for the first position in the ranking of this qualification competition.

Day 2 (Saturday) results in IKF EKC R1 West & East 2016
From Friday 3 until Sunday 5 June 2016, all participant teams are competing to be the numbers 1 and 2 of their IKF EKC R1 tournaments, which classifies for the IKF EKC 2016 that will take place from 22 to 30 October 2016 in the Netherlands.

Results from a worldwide survey of korfballers indicate the sport has the potential to play an important role in improving gender equity.
Carried out by Honorary Member of the International Korfball Federation and former chair of Korfball Australia Mr Roy Kirkby, the research attracted responses from 240 korfball people in 25 countries.
A majority of boys, girls, men and women had observed changes in gender relationships while playing korfball, becoming more accepting of the other gender’s point of view, more co-operative in joint gender activities, more accepting of the other gender in a leadership role, and promoting the involvement of the other gender.
A strong majority of respondents felt the influence of korfball on particular groups was somewhat positive or very positive.
Commenting on the survey findings, Roy Kirkby said: “Most Dutch respondents felt that there was no gender issue and that both genders were treated as one, with equality and equity in playing roles and arrangements. They felt that respect was an important outcome of playing together and there was greater ease in interaction and communications. From other cultures a number felt that people coming from single sex sports were happier and developed greater respect and understanding of the opposite gender in korfball. They appreciate being without the negative social issues of the single sex sports culture they had often experienced.”
One survey respondent from The Netherlands summarised her experience of gender relations in korfball:
“I am respected by men on the field, and those players also respect me off the field. I feel comfortable in the presence of men and korfball made me more outspoken to other men because it is natural. I don’t feel like I am any less than a man, off or on the field. I have witnessed several friendships and even love between the different players. Men and women view each other as equals and accept each others’ roles in the team. The team I play in has been mostly together from a young age and we, women and men, are good friends off the field. You participate easier with the other gender because you have been experiencing that in a high pressure environment.”
Roy Kirkby intends to continue working to further emphasise korfball’s potential to enhance gender equity and relationships.

The International Korfball Federation has appointed Mr Tilbert La Haye as its CEO. Mr La Haye (39) is from Delft (Netherlands) and will start leading the IKF’s operations from June 1, 2016. The appointment follows approval of the IKF growth strategy by the organization’s General Meeting last November, and the subsequently started recruitment process for the IKF’s first CEO.
Mr La Haye has degrees in Physical Education and Organization and Management. He has worked as a sports teacher, professional korfball coach, and as project manager for major elite and grass roots sports events in the Netherlands, Spain, and Colombia. He joins the IKF from the City of The Hague, where he has been employed as a Senior Consultant in the Department of Sports.
IKF President Jan Fransoo: “We are very pleased with Tilbert La Haye joining our organization. He will have a key responsibility in enhancing the professionalism in the support processes in our office to increase the quality of service to the IKF volunteers and the national korfball associations, and ensuring the realization of our strategic initiatives. These include the rapid growth of korfball4 with a major event or event series on the beach or on hard court, and the initiation of a management development program for our national organizations. His enthusiasm, energy, and experience will be a major driving force for the growth of korfball”.
Tilbert La Haye: “In the last 10 years I have been involved in different levels of korfball development and performance. Everywhere I came, from Asia to South America and Europe, I was surprised by the enormous passion that people have for korfball. This passion and the great potential I see in korfball to grow, are the main reasons I take on this challenge. A great honor! I specially look forward to work together with all 67 national federations of the IKF to help to develop korfball to a stronger and more professional sport with the Olympic Games as a final destination.”

The IKF Competitions Committee was obliged to a revised draw when Portugal despite several reminders failed to commit their participation. The IKF Executive Committee decided to replace Portugal by Turkey.
IKF Executive Committee member Mr Frank Buvens received Saturday 26 March 2016 the honorary membership of the Royal Belgium Korfball Federation (KBKB). Frank Buvens served the KBKB for many years as Director Topkorfball. Last Saturday he stepped down as KBKB Exco member.
IKF IT committee and IKF Jury member Mr Pierre Coppens received the KBKB honorary membership as well for his dedicated long lasting service for competitions in the KBKB. Pierre Coppens stepped down as well as KBKB exco member. Besides this title as KBKB honorary Member Pierre Coppens hold the IKF Badge of Honor.

Further received Mr Daniel de Rudder a Life TIme Award from the KBKB for his long lasting excellent career in korfball. The General Meeting of the KBKB gave Daniel a standing ovation to show her appreciation. Daniel de Rudder holds the IKF Badge of Honor as well.
Mr Alex Elewaut received a KBKB distinction as well 26 March 2016 for his distinghuised long lasting service to korfball. Mrs Danielle Ruts handed him the distinction as KBKB Badge of honor. The KBKB General Meeting gave Alex a well deserved big hand of applause.

First time participant Dominican Republic earned the well deserved fourth place after a loss in the bronze medal match against Chinese Taipei (12 – 15). What a huge result for this relative new IKF country.
The 2016 U19 KWC final showed a ‘fight’ between the eternal rivals Belgium and The Netherlands. At half time the Netherland had a six goals lead; 13 – 7. The many hundered speactators in the sportvenue and the live webcasting viewers saw an exciting second half. After 15 – 10 the Belgian team scored 5 goals in a row despite a Dutch time out at 15 – 12. In the final minutes the Dutch managed to expand the lead to four goals again. The end result is 22 – 18 and the Dutch win the 21st edition of the U19 Korfball World Cup.
KNKV President, Mr Rob Meijer and the alderman of sport of the city of Leeuwarden Mr Andries Ekhart awarded the prizes in the closing ceremony in front of an enthousiastic crowd.
