CK Vallparadis – 1908 SZAC Budapest 17 – 16

The Catalans were always in the lead. But at the very end of the match the Hungarians missed a penalty in which case with enough time remaining it would have been possible to make a come back. On the other hand Vallparadis, disadvantaged by the early starting hour, did not benefit from a crowd of supporters. The fifth place is now the highest possible.

Top/Solar Compleet – KCC Budejovice 30 – 11

Accurate shooting and courageous Czechs! That is what can be told of this second game of day 2. Top is ready for the final and Budejovice will try to show a better performance later on.

Trojans – SG Pegasus 14 – 19

The traditional clash between the champions of England and Germany was an exciting game until there was a gap in the second half which the Trojans were incapable to reduce. Some decisions were not always in favour of Trojans whereas the Germans slowly but surely secured the difference in score with long attacks.

AKC Luma – NC Benfica 17 – 8

It has become common for AKC Luma  that the players need to warm up during the first half of the game to become effective in the second. During the first 10 minutes Benfica even was the better team. With 2 minutes in the first half AKC took the lead for the first time. (10 – 8)

Then it turned out that Benfica had given their best performance and forgot to score giving AKC the chance to easily clinch the frame.

Trojans KC – 1908 SZAC Budapest 17 – 13

The Hungarian team had chances against Trojans. Just at the end the more experienced English players were able to create a narrow gap which will keep the next champion in the top six. On the other hand the Hungarian champion will be obliged to go through a first round. But then with what we saw during this tournament, it will be hard for other competitors to keep them from the first two places that gives entry to the final round in Belgium 2019.

KCC Budejovice – CK Vallparadis 13 – 12

Vallparadis goes to first rounds!

With 8-8 as the score at half time, no one could predict the outcome of this game. But then both teams forgot to score. Much struggle, many inside moves without efficiency, not a match to remember. At the end the most fortunate was Budejovice. The last Catalan attacks without strategy could not make the change.

Top/Solar Compleet – NC Benfica 27 – 13

It takes courage to play against a Dutch team. The mere fact that Benfica could score 13 goals must be appreciated. The whirlpool of the play of Top was much enjoyed by many spectators creating a good atmosphere. They proved that they are ready to face any opponent in the final game of the tournament.

SG Pegasus – AKC Luma 9 – 21

No slow start from AKC this time. Excellent focus from the beginning and power play throughout the first half keeping the Germans from coming into the game (5-11) A general repetition for the final!

The second half was a copy of the first. The Germans too much trying for opportunities inside with ball recuperation for the opponents as a consequence. Especially the female players of AKC played a part in the high score 5′ before the end (8-20).

Hans Vroegh, long-time international development volunteer, dies at 76

The IKF regrets to announce the passing of Mr Hans Vroegh, bearer of the IKF Pin of Merit, at age 76, following a progressive disease. Mr Vroegh has spent all of his life supporting the development of korfball, with in particular during the past decades an emphasis on international development. He was one of the key figures behind the “Apeldoorn Youth Tournament” which later developed into the IKF Youth World Cup, and invitation tournament for national U23 teams, and for the international development committee of the KNKV East District. Later, after moving to the North of the Netherlands, he also supported the U19 Korfball World Cup for some years. Within the IKF, Vroegh had been active as referee instructor and as development officer for India and Indonesia. He was awarded the IKF Pin of Merit in 2012.

Mr Vroegh is survived by his wife, two children and four grandchildren. A mourning ceremony will be held on January 10 in Oldeberkoop, Netherlands.

IKF presents competition calendar 2017-2021

With the new IKF competition calendar 2017-2021 the number of (official) tournaments has increased. A clear choice have been made by the IKF Council to invest in the future of korfball by putting more emphasis on youth competition.

This means that starting from 2018 annually there will be held an Under 21 Korfball Championship, either a continental or world championship.

Apart from that the former (unofficial) Under 19 Korfball World Cup has been transformed into an official Under 19 World Korfball Championship, bi-annually organised. In the years without a World Championship Asia and Europe will have continental Under 19 Championships.

To stimulate korfball development around the globe, the Under 19 European Korfball Championship has been given an ‘Open’ status. This to provide the opportunity for countries in continents where no continental events are being organised to further develop the sport. For now the same thing counts for the Asian countries to give them the opportunity to play against the strongest European teams and keep improving their level.

The composition of the competition calendar for the seniors has remained the same as in the last years, with a yearly program for at least the top countries; a bi-annual continental championship in the even years is alternated with the World Korfball Championship and the World Games in the uneven years.

Continental Championships 2018: Africa and the Americas

The year 2018 is the year of the IKF Continental Korfball Championships. Spread over the year all continents will celebrate their championship. An important year for all countries, because apart from ‘just’ competing for the continental title, the continental events are being used as qualification events for the IKF World Korfball Championship (IKF WKC) July/August 2019 in Durban, South Africa.

The first Continental Championship of the year is the IKF Pan-American Korfball Championship (IKF PAKC). This championship will be celebrated in Cali, Colombia. From Friday 2 March until Sunday 4 March the Colombian Korfball Federation is in charge of the organisation of the second edition of the IKF PAKC. With at least five countries participating, the first two teams of the event will automatically qualify for the IKF WKC.

The second Continental Championship of the year is the All Africa Korfball Championship (IKF AAKC). This championship will be celebrated in the city of Chitungwiza – Harare, Zimbabwe. From Friday 27 April until Sunday 29 April the Zimbabwe Korfball Federation is in charge of the organisation of the fourth edition of the IKF AAKC. With two secured places for Africa on the IKF WKC and South Africa being the host of the IKF WKC, only the best African team qualifies for the IKF WKC. In the case of South Africa winning the championship, also the number two of the African Continent will qualify.

The announcement of the other two IKF Continental Championships in 2018; IKF Asia-Oceania Korfball Championship and the IKF European Korfball Championship will follow in a later stadium. Both events will be organised later in the year.

2018 FISU University World Championships

The FISU announced the 35 host cities for the 2018 FISU University World Championships. As of 2018 korfball is part of the FISU Calendar.
