Belgium open EKC 2026 campaign with commanding 26–8 win over Hungary

Belgium made an emphatic start to the IKF European Korfball Championship 2026, defeating Hungary 26–8 in Group B in Otrokovice.

From the opening stages the Belgians controlled the tempo and created a steady stream of scoring chances. They built a decisive advantage through sharp ball movement, varied attacking options and clinical finishing from a range of distances. Hungary competed with determination and found occasional replies, but were unable to stem the flow as Belgium maintained intensity across all four quarters.

Joke Van Maldeghem led the scoring with six goals, while Lisa Van Gorp added four. Glenn Pauwels, Kian Amorgaste and captain Lisa Pauwels each scored three, with further contributions from Eline Denie, Wout Van Elsackers, Wannes Struyf, Jordy Antes and Yannick Van Gucht. The Belgian attack and defence combined effectively under coach Kevin De Waele, with useful impact from the bench.

For Hungary, Öhlmann Kristóf and Eszenyi Máté scored twice each, with additional goals from Kiss Míra, Majer Zsolt Ferenc, Csernák Szabolcs and Zsombor Dénes. Despite the result, the Hungarian side showed spirit under coach Hack Barnabas.

The victory gives Belgium an ideal opening result in a competitive Group B that also features Portugal and Scotland. Hungary will look to respond in their remaining matches, while Belgium turn their attention to the next challenge as they aim for a strong overall tournament showing.
