Match report ✍️
In a decisive Group A encounter that closed the first phase of the IKF European Korfball Championship 2026 in Prostějov, Catalonia edged Poland to claim second place and a place among the top eight teams progressing to the upper bracket of the second group phase. Poland, meanwhile, finish third and will contest the places 9–16.
The match lived up to its billing as a high-stakes qualifier. Catalonia established an early advantage through a series of sharp running-in goals, with captain Aitana Segura Aparicio and Julia Soriano Milián both finding the korf from close range. Pau Segura Aparicio was particularly influential, converting a free pass and a medium shot while also contributing to Catalonia’s overall control of the attack. Poland responded with determination, Natalia Klimczyk leading their scoring with a combination of running-in, penalty and medium-range efforts, supported by Lukasz Krzemienski. The contest remained tight throughout, with both sides showing the tactical discipline and transition speed that have marked their campaigns so far.
Catalonia’s ability to convert running-in opportunities and maintain defensive organisation proved decisive. Poland’s attack, built around Klimczyk and Tamara Siemieniuk, created chances but was unable to overturn the Catalan lead in the second half. The result confirms Catalonia’s progression as one of the stronger contenders outside the top seeds, while Poland remain competitive and capable of pushing higher-ranked opponents.
Looking ahead to Group Phase 2
Catalonia now enter the second group phase among the top eight, where they will face the other group winners and runners-up. Having already shown they can score heavily against lower-ranked opposition (as in their 26–9 win over Switzerland) and compete in structured games, the Catalans will aim to build on this result, improve their consistency against the strongest teams, and keep alive their ambitions of reaching the semi-finals. Coach Enric Delgado’s side will look to maintain their running-in threat and defensive solidity as the quality of opposition rises.
Poland head into the 9–16 bracket with valuable experience from a competitive Group A. Their earlier victory over Switzerland demonstrated attacking variety, and the narrow defeat to Catalonia highlighted both their resilience and areas for improvement in finishing and defensive transitions. Under coach Robert Williams, the Polish side will target a strong showing in the lower half of the draw, seeking to finish as high as possible and continue their development on the European stage. With players such as Klimczyk and Krzemienski in form, they remain a side capable of springing surprises.
