Czechia edge England 18-17 in tense Group D encounter
Prostějov, 17 October 2026 – Hosts Czechia claimed a hard-fought 18-17 victory over England in a Group D thriller at the IKF European Korfball Championship 2026, keeping their perfect record intact after two matches.
In a tightly contested 40-minute battle, the two strongest sides in the group traded goals throughout, with neither team able to establish a decisive lead. Petr Galicek was the standout performer, finishing with eight goals for the hosts, while Billy Ashby led England’s scoring with five.
England showed strong resilience, twice coming from behind and equalising at 16-16 late in the match through Ashley Warner. Czechia responded immediately through Galicek, and although England levelled again from the penalty spot via Ashby, Galicek struck once more to secure the narrow win in the final moments.
The result leaves Czechia top of Group D with six points. England sit on three points alongside Wales, while Ireland remain bottom after their opening defeat. With one group match remaining for each side, both Czechia and England remain well placed to advance to the second phase, but the intensity of this encounter underlined how competitive the pool has become.
