Czechia Power to Top Spot as Group Phase 1 Concludes

IKF European Korfball Championship 2026 | Group D | 18 October 2026

Hosts Czechia closed out the opening phase of the IKF European Korfball Championship in emphatic fashion, sweeping aside Wales 16-1 in the final Group D fixture of the day. The result confirmed Czechia’s place at the head of the pool and set up two very different journeys into the second group phase.

Czechia controlled the contest from the opening whistle. Petr Pesak led the way with three goals, while Frantisek Valenta, Jan Theissig, Lenka Buriánková, Nela Kubu and Rostislav Kortus each contributed two. The home side’s clinical finishing — a mix of penalties, running-ins, medium and long shots — proved too much for a Welsh defence that struggled to contain the host nation’s movement and shooting accuracy. Wales managed only a solitary goal, underlining the gap in experience and execution on the day.

With the victory, Czechia finished Group D with a perfect record of three wins. England and Wales both ended on three points after day 2, with the head-to-head and goal difference separating the sides for second and third. Ireland completes the pool so far without a point.

Looking Ahead: Second Group Phase

As group winners, Czechia advance into the upper section of the second group phase, where the eight best-performing teams will compete for the top places and a path towards the medal rounds. Coach Edwin Bouman’s side will face a significant step up in opposition quality, but their unbeaten run and the confidence gained from the narrow victory over England earlier in the week leave them well placed to challenge for a semi-final berth on home soil.

Wales, meanwhile, will contest the lower section of the second group phase, targeting places 9–16. Having shown competitive spirit in their other matches, Ross Carr-Taylor’s side will look to build on the experience gained against the hosts and push for a respectable finish in the ranking matches. A strong showing could still deliver valuable ranking points and momentum heading towards future international campaigns.

With Group Phase 1 now complete, attention turns to the second phase, where the true shape of the championship will begin to emerge.
