England Secure Fifth Place with 12-8 Victory over Catalonia
England claimed fifth place at the IKF European Korfball Championship 2026 with a controlled 12-8 victory over Catalonia at the Datart Sports Hall in Zlín. The result leaves Catalonia in sixth. Both teams had already secured automatic qualification for the IKF World Korfball Championship 2027 in the Netherlands by finishing inside the top eight, so the match was purely about final ranking and ending the tournament on a high note.
England, coached by John Denton, established early control and never trailed after the opening stages. They scored efficiently from a variety of positions, with Ashley Warner particularly influential and further contributions from Shannon Jones, Rachel Page and Joseph Bedford. The English side maintained better defensive organisation throughout, restricting Catalonia’s attacking flow and limiting the impact of captain Miquel Gil Maeso, who finished with three goals. Half-time had stood at 5-4 in England’s favour, and the English increased their lead in the second half to finish clear winners.
Catalonia, under Enric Delgado, showed flashes of quality, particularly through Gil Maeso’s running-in and near-range efforts, and Temi Combis Julià also scored. However, they were unable to sustain pressure or convert enough opportunities against a disciplined English defence. The final margin of four goals reflected England’s greater consistency across the full 40 minutes.
Tournament Recap
England – Fifth Place
England produced a solid campaign that confirmed their place among Europe’s stronger sides. After finishing second in Group D behind hosts Czechia, they advanced to the upper half of the draw. A 15-13 win over Catalonia in Group Phase 2 was followed by a convincing 20-8 victory over Portugal in the places 5–8 cross-final. Their final-day success against Catalonia seals fifth place and automatic World Championship qualification. Key performers throughout included Ashley Warner, Shane Buckland, Blake Palfreyman and Joseph Bedford. The result gives coach John Denton’s side positive momentum heading into preparations for 2027.
Catalonia – Sixth Place
Catalonia showed resilience across both group phases and the classification stage. They recovered from a heavy opening defeat to the Netherlands and finished their first group strongly enough to reach the top eight. In Group E they lost narrowly to England, then edged Türkiye 16-14 in the places 5–8 cross-final to reach the fifth-place match. Despite a determined effort on the final day, they were unable to overcome England. Sixth place still represents a respectable finish and guarantees their place at the World Championship. Captain Miquel Gil Maeso, Julia Soriano Milián and Laura Tobaruela Ruiz were among the standout contributors under coach Enric Delgado.
With the top ten teams from this European Championship automatically qualifying for the IKF World Korfball Championship 2027 (the Netherlands already qualified as hosts), both England and Catalonia can now focus on building towards next year’s global event. Their performances in Zlín have secured the most important objective: a ticket to the Netherlands.
