England Finish Strong Against Ireland to End Group Phase 1
England closed out the first group phase with a solid 10-5 win over Ireland in their final Group D match. The victory helps secure England’s place in the top-eight section of the second group phase, while Ireland will contest the ranking matches for places 9 to 16.
Ashley Warner scored twice for England, with further goals from Billy Ashby, Blake Palfreyman, Dominic Brooks, Jonathan Potter, Marcus Tighe, Natasha Dawson, Neala Brennan and Shane Buckland. Ireland replied through Stephen McDonagh (two), along with Conor Williams, Elizabeth Tighe, Mark O’Keeffe and Neala Brennan. England’s disciplined performance, built on penalties, running-ins and medium-range scoring, gave them clear control in a low-scoring contest.
Czechia had already claimed top spot in Group D. England’s result confirms their progression as one of the stronger second-placed sides, while Ireland finish at the bottom of the pool.
Looking Ahead: Second Group Phase
England, under coach John Denton, now move into the upper section of the second group phase. There they will face higher-quality opposition as they chase a place in the top eight and a potential route towards the medal rounds. Their ability to manage games efficiently, as shown against Ireland, will be tested at a higher level.
Ireland, coached by John Tighe, head into the lower section that decides places 9–16. The match against England offered valuable minutes against a well-organised side, and the Irish team will aim to use that experience to collect positive results and improve their final ranking in the championship.
With Group Phase 1 complete, both teams prepare for the next stage of the IKF European Korfball Championship in Czechia.
