Match report ✍️

Hungary edge Scotland 8–5 in tight Group B contest

Hungary secured a hard-fought victory at the IKF European Korfball Championship 2026, defeating Scotland 8–5 in Group B in Otrokovice.

The match was closely contested for long periods, with both sides finding it difficult to create clear scoring opportunities in a low-scoring encounter. Hungary gradually established a slight advantage through sharp movement and clinical finishing at key moments, including from running-in and medium range. Scotland remained competitive and continued to threaten, but Hungary managed the decisive phases better to claim the narrow win.

Majer Zsolt Ferenc led the scoring with three goals for Hungary, while Eszenyi Máté and Csernák Szabolcs each added two. Zsombor Dénes also scored. The Hungarian attack and defence combined effectively under coach Hack Barnabas.

For Scotland, Ellise Anderson scored twice, with additional goals from captain Jennifer Devlin, Matthew McHugh and Ross Acklam. Despite the narrow defeat, the Scottish side showed determination under coach John Bagnall.

The result gives Hungary an important first win in a competitive Group B that also features Belgium and Portugal. Scotland will look to bounce back in their remaining matches, while Hungary turn their attention to the next challenge as they aim for a strong overall tournament showing.
