Hungary Defeat Wales 17-10 to Secure World Championship Qualification

Zlín, 22 October 2026 – Hungary claimed a convincing 17-10 victory over Wales in their places 9–12 cross-final at the IKF European Korfball Championship 2026, earning a place in tomorrow’s ninth-place final and automatically qualifying for the IKF World Korfball Championship 2027 in the Netherlands. Played at the Datart Sports Hall in Zlín, the match saw Hungary gradually take control after a competitive opening. Captain Vaszkó Diána led the way with four goals, supported by strong contributions from Dörfi György and Öhlmann Kristóf (three each), along with further efforts from Farkas Krisztina, Kiss Míra and Csernák Szabolcs. Wales, under coach Ross Carr-Taylor, stayed competitive through Leo Comerford (three goals) and Yasmin Williams (two), but were unable to match Hungary’s attacking variety, which included five running-in goals and clinical finishing from a range of distances. With the win, Hungary advance to tomorrow’s 19:15 ninth-place match against Poland and have already secured their place at the 2027 World Championship. Wales will face Slovakia in the 11th-place match at 17:30. Places 9 and 10 at this European Championship carry automatic qualification for the World Championship (the Netherlands, as hosts, are already qualified). Expectations for the Final Day

Hungary will head into the ninth-place final with confidence after topping their second-phase group and producing a strong all-round performance today under coach Hack Barnabas. A win against Poland would confirm a top-nine European ranking and provide further momentum ahead of the World Championship.

Wales will look to finish on a positive note against Slovakia in the 11th-place match. Although they miss out on automatic World Championship qualification, a strong result can still deliver a respectable ranking and valuable experience as they continue to develop as a competitive European side.

Both teams now prepare for tomorrow’s placement finals as the championship reaches its climax in Zlín.
