Poland claim commanding 14β2 victory over Ireland to open Group Phase 2
Poland opened their second group phase campaign in emphatic style, defeating Ireland 14β2 in a one-sided contest that confirmed the difference in class between the two sides.
The Polish attack was clinical from the outset. Captain Tamara Siemieniuk and Paulina Ploszka each finished with three goals, while Izabela Kolodziejczyk, Lukasz Krzemiensowski and Marcin Nowak contributed two apiece. Polandβs scoring was built predominantly around medium-range shots (nine), supplemented by three running-ins and two near goals, reflecting controlled possession and well-timed movement into scoring positions.
Ireland struggled to contain the Polish forwards and managed only two goals β one long-range effort and one near shot. Despite the best efforts of captain Alf Timney and the rest of the squad under coach John Tighe, Ireland were unable to generate consistent scoring opportunities against a well-organised Polish defence.
The result gives Poland an ideal start in Pool G of the second phase, where they are grouped with Wales, Ireland and Switzerland as they contest places 9β16. Ireland, who finished bottom of Group D without a point, now face an uphill task to improve their final ranking.
Looking ahead
Poland will be looking to build on this performance and secure as high a finish as possible in the 9β16 bracket. A strong showing against Wales and Switzerland could see them push for a top-12 placing and valuable ranking points. Ireland, meanwhile, will hope to take something from their remaining fixtures β particularly against Switzerland β and use the experience to continue developing their national programme.
