Match report ✍️
Portugal secured second place in Group B and a place among the top eight teams with a convincing 25–7 victory over Hungary in the final match of the first group phase of the IKF European Korfball Championship 2026. Hungary finish third and will contest the places 9–16.
The Portuguese side controlled the contest from the opening minutes, establishing a clear advantage through a combination of clinical finishing and disciplined organisation. Júlio Duraes Ruivo was outstanding, scoring eight goals and repeatedly exploiting space around the korf with medium-range accuracy. Captain Inês Santos added four goals, while Beatriz Rosa contributed three as Portugal maintained pressure across all four quarters. Their shot selection was varied and effective, with a high volume of medium shots complemented by running-in and near-range efforts.
Hungary, coached by Hack Barnabas, found it difficult to generate consistent scoring opportunities against a well-organised Portuguese defence. VASZKÓ Diána and MAJER Zsolt Ferenc each scored twice, but the Hungarian attack struggled to convert chances into a sustained challenge. Portugal’s coach Carla Antunes was able to rotate players effectively in the latter stages without losing control of the match.
Looking ahead to the second group phase
Portugal now progress to the top-eight section of the second group phase alongside the other group winners and runners-up. After an opening-day win over Scotland and a competitive showing against Belgium, this result confirms their ability to dominate when the opportunity arises. They will look to build on the scoring form of Duraes Ruivo and Santos as they face stronger opposition, aiming to secure a favourable position for the later knockout stages and keep their European ambitions alive.
Hungary head into the 9–16 bracket after a demanding Group B that included a heavy defeat to Belgium. The experience gained against higher-ranked sides should prove valuable as they target a strong finish in the lower half of the draw. With players such as VASZKÓ Diána and MAJER Zsolt Ferenc capable of contributing, the Hungarian side will focus on improving their conversion rate and defensive transitions while seeking the best possible ranking from the remaining matches.
