Match report ✍️
Portugal make strong start with 24–8 win over Scotland
Portugal began their IKF European Korfball Championship 2026 campaign in convincing style, defeating Scotland 24–8 in Group B in Otrokovice.
The Portuguese side took control early and maintained a high tempo throughout the match. They created a steady flow of scoring opportunities through sharp movement and clinical finishing, converting regularly from medium range and the penalty spot. Scotland competed with determination and found occasional replies, but were unable to close the gap as Portugal kept the pressure high across all four quarters.
Catarina Frade led the scoring with four goals, while Celise Ribeiro and captain Tiago Vasconcelos Luz each added three. Further contributions came from Vasco Diniz, Júlio Duraes Ruivo, Maria Banha and Joao Carlos Silva Pereira Jesus de Almeida (two each), with the rest of the Portuguese attack and defence combining effectively under coach Catia Correia.
For Scotland, Abbie Mahoney and captain Jennifer Devlin scored twice each, with additional goals from Heather Mackintosh, Ellise Anderson, James Percival and Nadine Gallagher. Despite the result, the Scottish team showed spirit under coach James Taylor.
The victory gives Portugal an ideal opening result in a competitive Group B that also features Belgium and Hungary. Scotland will look to respond in their remaining matches, while Portugal turn their attention to the next challenge as they aim for a strong overall tournament showing.
