Scotland edge Switzerland 13-11 to claim 15th place at IKF European Korfball Championship 2026
Zlín, 23 October 2026 – Scotland finished their IKF European Korfball Championship 2026 campaign on a positive note, defeating Switzerland 13-11 in the placement match for 15th position at the DATART Arena in Zlín.
In a closely contested encounter that saw the lead change hands several times, both sides showed determination right through to the final whistle. Scotland’s captain Jennifer Devlin was outstanding with six goals, while Switzerland’s Romain Nijenhuis matched that tally with six of his own. Aaliyah Gfeller and Louise Otterman each added two for the Swiss, with Cody Sargent and Louise Otterman contributing two apiece for Scotland.
After a tightly fought first half, the match remained level at 11-11 deep into the final period. Scotland then edged ahead through a medium-range goal by James Percival before Nadine Gallagher sealed the 13-11 victory with a near-range effort in the 39th minute. The result sees Scotland finish 15th and Switzerland 16th in the final ranking of the 16-team championship.
With the top ten places at the European Championship securing automatic qualification for the IKF World Korfball Championship 2027 in the Netherlands, neither side will advance to the global stage next year. Both teams, however, gained valuable experience against a range of European opposition across the group stages and placement matches in Prostějov, Otrokovice and Zlín.
Tournament recap: Scotland
Scotland opened their campaign in Group B against the strong Belgian, Portuguese and Hungarian sides. After finishing bottom of their pool, they progressed into the lower placement section, where results against Serbia and Ireland ultimately saw them contest the 15th-place match. Under coach John Bagnall, the Scots showed resilience in several tight contests and will take positives from their competitive performances, particularly the contributions of captain Jennifer Devlin and the attacking threat of Cody Sargent.
Tournament recap: Switzerland
Switzerland faced a demanding Group A draw that included the Netherlands, Catalonia and Poland, finishing without points from the opening phase. In the second group stage and subsequent placement matches they continued to compete hard, with Romain Nijenhuis regularly among the scorers. Coached by Casper Boom, the Swiss side finishes 16th. While the overall ranking is disappointing, the experience of facing Europe’s top nations provides a foundation for further development ahead of future European and World Championship cycles.
The top ten teams at the IKF European Korfball Championship 2026 qualify automatically for the IKF World Korfball Championship 2027. With the Netherlands already assured of their place as hosts, the remaining European berths have now been confirmed through the results of the championship.
