Türkiye Edge Slovakia in Tight Group C Decider
Türkiye secured second place in Group C with a hard-fought 15-12 victory over Slovakia in the final match of the opening phase. The narrow win ensures Türkiye advance to the top-eight section of the second group phase, while Slovakia drop into the ranking battle for places 9–16.
The contest remained tight throughout. Ali Furkan Çetin top-scored for Türkiye with four goals, supported by three each from Erva Duman and Hilal Karas. Slovakia stayed in touch through Zuzana Bušíková’s three goals and a series of running-ins, but Türkiye’s greater variety of scoring — including three long shots and a late free pass — proved decisive. A missed penalty by Slovakia late in the match underlined the fine margins.
Germany had already sealed top spot in the group, while Serbia finished bottom. The result means Türkiye join the German side in the upper half of the second group phase, where the eight strongest teams will compete for the highest places and a route into the medal rounds.
Looking Ahead: Second Group Phase
For Türkiye, the victory provides valuable momentum as they step up against stronger opposition in the top-eight section. Coach Mastafa Kamil Kaya’s side will need to raise their intensity and defensive organisation if they are to challenge for a semi-final place, but their ability to grind out a close win against a competitive Slovakia offers encouragement.
Slovakia will now focus on the lower section of the second group phase. Having shown they can compete closely with a side heading into the top half, they will target strong performances in the ranking matches to secure the best possible finish between 9th and 16th and gather useful experience for future championships.
With Group Phase 1 complete, both teams now prepare for the next stage of the championship in Czechia.
