Wales secure 15β12 win over Switzerland in Pool G opener
Wales claimed a hard-fought 15β12 victory over Switzerland in their opening match of the second group phase, taking an important early lead in the battle for places 9β16.
Yasmin Williams, Kristopher Banham and Carra Tillon (Switzerland) each finished with three goals. Wales also received strong support from Annie McKay, James Wilcox, Joanne Davies and Leo Comerford (two each). The Welsh scoring was well balanced, featuring seven medium-range goals, three running-ins and three near shots. Switzerland stayed competitive throughout, converting four penalties and finding the target through medium and near efforts, but were unable to overhaul the Welsh lead.
The result gives Wales three points in Pool G, which also contains Poland and Ireland. Switzerland remain without points from this phase and will need a strong response in their remaining fixture.
Looking ahead to tomorrowβs decisive matches
Both sides face crucial games on the final day of the second group phase. Wales meet Poland, while Switzerland face Ireland. The outcomes will shape the final order in Pool G and determine seeding for the placement matches that decide positions 9β16.
Securing 9th or 10th place carries special importance: the top ten teams at the European Championship earn automatic qualification for the IKF World Korfball Championship 2027 (with the Netherlands already qualified as hosts). With several nations still in contention for those final berths, tomorrowβs results could prove decisive for Wales and Switzerlandβs hopes of reaching the global stage next year.
