Hungary edge Serbia 12–9 in hard-fought Pool H opener
Hungary secured a valuable 12–9 victory over Serbia in their opening match of the second group phase, claiming three points in the battle for places 9–16.
Kiss Míra was the standout performer with four goals, supported by two apiece from Vágó Anna, Csernák Szabolcs and captain Majer Zsolt Ferenc. Hungary scored through a mix of medium-range efforts (five), near shots (three), penalties (two), one running-in and one long-range goal. Serbia kept the contest tight for long periods, relying heavily on four penalties and three running-ins, with Mina Vukić, Petar Jovanović and Petar Perković each contributing two goals.
The win gives Hungary an important early advantage in Pool H, which also features Slovakia and Scotland. Serbia, despite the defeat, showed resilience and will look to bounce back quickly.
Looking ahead to tomorrow’s decisive matches
Both teams face crucial fixtures on the final day of the second group phase. Hungary meet Slovakia, while Serbia face Scotland. Results in these matches will determine the order in Pool H and, ultimately, seeding for the placement matches that decide positions 9–16.
Finishing 9th or 10th is of particular significance: the top ten teams at the European Championship (excluding the Netherlands, already qualified as hosts) earn a place at the IKF World Korfball Championship 2027. With several sides still in contention for those final qualification spots, every point and every goal tomorrow could prove decisive for Hungary and Serbia’s international ambitions.
