Match report

NILAI, Malaysia – 14 August 2026 – Japan U21 produced one of the most significant results of their IKF U21 World Korfball Championship campaign, edging Australia U21 16–15 in a tense Pool G encounter at the Selangor National Sports Complex.

In a match that remained finely balanced throughout, Japan held their nerve when it mattered most to secure their first victory of the championship. Australia, who had been searching for a result after three defeats in the second group phase, pushed their opponents all the way, but Japan found the crucial extra goal in a dramatic finish.

The result represents an important milestone for Japan, who had struggled to turn competitive passages of play into points earlier in the tournament. Their 16-goal attacking return was their best of the championship, while the one-goal margin underlined how closely matched the two sides were.

Australia can take plenty of encouragement from their performance despite the narrow defeat. Having already shown improved form in the second group phase, they remained within touching distance of Japan throughout and came close to forcing the match in their favour.

For Japan, however, the victory provides a deserved reward for their persistence. Their ability to stay composed in a high-pressure contest and convert the decisive opportunities ultimately made the difference.

The 16–15 victory moves Japan to their first win of the tournament, while Australia will look to finish their campaign strongly in their remaining classification matches.
