UKK WUM Warszawa and 1908 SZAC Budapest banned from international competition next year

Following the late withdrawal of UKK WUM Warszawa at this years IKF Europa Cup final round and 1908 SZAC Budapest at the IKF Europa Shield the IKF Executive Committee has decided that both clubs will not be allowed to represent their country in next years IKF Europa Cup or IKF Europa Shield. The clubs have been banned to take part in any IKF event until 1 July 2018.

Furthermore, a fine has been imposed upon the Polish Korfball Federation (PZKorf) and Hungarian Korfball Association (HKA) of 1,000 euros in line with the IKF disciplinary procedures 2015. Under the IKF Regulations, a national federation is responsible for any acts of its members with regard to IKF competitions.

This decision follows the stricter line that was announced clearly during last IKF Congress in 2015, Antwerp (Belgium). Late withdrawals leave the IKF and Local Organiser Committee with both organisational and financial problems. Apart from the negative publicity for the specific tournament and korfball in general.

THE WORLD GAMES 2017 POOL DRAW

During the International Korfball Federation Executive Committee meeting on 14 January 2017, the IKF Exco made a draw to establish the pools for the World Games Korfball Event to be held from 21 to 25 July 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland.

The World Games is the most important korfball event in the IKF’s 2017 calendar.

The result of the draw is:

POOL A POOL B
1. The Netherlands Chinese Taipei
2. Belgium Great Britain
3. China Germany
4. Australia Poland

The teams in all four lines were drawn with each set of two teams based on the IKF Ranking from 1 January 2017; CLICK HERE.

Worthwhile to mention, the eternal rivals The Netherlands and Belgium will already meet in the pool phase.

The Netherlands is the current holder of the World Games Korfball title following the last event held in Cali, Colombia in 2013.

The IKF will publish the match schedule for this World Games Korfball event before 15 May 2017.

IKF Ranking 2017: no major changes in top 10

No major changes in the top 10 of the new IKF ranking are seen after the Continental Championships in Europe and Asia. Only England and Belgium have swapped position on the ranking and Germany goes up from position seven to five, leaving China and Czech Republic behind

* Points for the ranking are mainly earned through participation in IKF events with a weighting for each event given according to the importance of the event. Countries who take part in qualification for a final round also get points for that event, being ranked for example, 17th, 18th etc. Points earned are written down each year until the next version of the event when the previous version drops out of the calculations. With the change in some continental championships to a bi-annual rather than a four yearly cycles weighting reductions are revised to reflect this.

The events counting at present towards the ranking are: IKF WKC, IKF U23 WKC, IKF Continental Championship, IKF Continental U21/23 Championship, IKF AOKC, IKF Asia U23KC, IKF University WKC, IKF European Bowl.

President’s blog: Happy World Games Year!

(by Jan Fransoo – IKF President) In July of this year we will celebrate the 10th edition of The World Games. The World Games is the pinnacle of  korfball competitions: the best eight countries in the world compete for the medals in an IOC-recognized multi-sports competition.

With the inclusion of The World Games in Thomas Bach’s Agenda 2020, the importance and exposure of this event has reached a next level. Together with the International World Games Association, the IOC will be more closely involved in the program and organization of this multi-sports competition. With prior World Games sports such as rugby and badminton now on the program of the Olympic Games, and prior Olympic sports such as softball on the program of The World Games, I expect these games to develop into the premier stepping stone closely paired with the Olympic Games. Under the leadership of IOC Member Jose Perurena, the close ties between the IOC and the IWGA that were developed by Ron Froehlich have been strengthened further.

What does this imply for korfball? As a key sport in eight out of nine prior editions of The World Games, and this time being in the first half of the program, the korfball event will offer huge opportunities for exposure of our sport. Media coverage will be more then ever before, as will attention by Members and staff of the IOC. I am sure the athletes will show the best of their performance. The IKF Competitions Committee is working hard to ensure the best possible entertained competition, further improving the excellent spectator experience we have witnessed in Cali in 2013.

In the future, the IKF is targeting to add a second korfball discipline to the program of The World Games. After the inaugural 2017 Open European Beach Korfball Championship and likely Asian Beach Korfball Championship, we plan to work toward a series of beach korfball events that will position us for a beach korfball tournament as part of the 2021 World Games. In this way, two korfball competitions could be part of the 2021 World Games in the USA. Delivering an excellent event in 2017 in Wroclaw is however crucial for creating that opportunity.

Looking forward to these Games in Poland, let me also take this opportunity to send all of you, whether player, official, or fan, the best wishes for another exciting year of korfball. Don’t miss attending the World Games and see you in Wroclaw!

Dr Jan Fransoo

IKF President
