Netherlands win Gold and Silver at IKF UKWC
Netherlands 2, who were drafted in to the IKF UKWC following the late withdrawal of Russia due to visa problems, beat Netherlands 1 28 – 23 to claim the gold medal at the 2015 edition of the University Korfball World Cup held in Norwich (GBR). Normally two national teams from the same country cannot participate in IKF events but this event was held using University sport rules which allow a second team from a country to be invited to fill vacancies in an event. The bronze medal match saw Chinese Taipei beat Great Britain 1 30 – 22.
The final day produced an excellent day of korfball and showcased the sport well in front of watching FISU delegates. Not only did the final two matches of the day record over 50 goals in each of them but the match for 5th place – Turkey vs China – went down to the final few seconds with Turkey snatching a 25 – 24 victory. The match for 7th place saw Hong Kong China beat Great Britain 2 by golden goal 18 – 17. Overall 187 goals were scored in an exciting day’s korfball in front of a large, enthusiastic crowd.
