I often get asked the question what it takes for a sport to be on the Olympic program. Many are interested to learn about criteria such as universality, TV and other commercial exposure, and youth appeal. Despite the long list of criteria that the IOC uses to make a well-informed decision, the key answer to this question is that it is a competition. Entering the Olympic program is a competition between sports. Therefore, we as korfball community need to answer the question what we need to do to outperform some of the sports that are currently on the program.
The answer is that much remains to be done, but it can be summarized in 3 words: stronger international participation, changing medal tables at our events, and a larger viewership among those that do not play korfball. Our targets towards 2023 are to have a sold out world championship for all matches, irrespective of the location, to have two countries in the final that are not among today’s three A countries, and to have 75 countries in the world championship qualification.
With our fantastic sport that is so close to Olympic values we have the best possible addition to the Olympic program. With your work as korfball volunteers in your country you can help us in making the world to realize this.
Jan Fransoo
President, International Korfball Federation
President, Association of IOC Recognised International Sports Federations
Vice-President, SportAccord
Thursday, 15 November 2012, Wolfgang Gebauer, passed away in the age of 58 after a long period of illness. He was a korfball player of Germany’s first generation in his club Adler Rauxel and inside the national association DTB. He served as IKF treasurer from 2003 till 2007.
Wolfgang Gebauer lived for korfball.
He was a player during the IKF Europa Cup 1976 in London. A few years later Wolfgang made his next step: In 1982 he was elected club president in Adler Rauxel. He recognized that local success could be adequate to local improvements but realized that korfball needed more attention on the international level as well. He took the Chair of the German National Korfball organization in 1990.
In 1997 Wolfgang’s engagement was honored by the IKF with the “Pin of Merit”.
Together with his wife Birgit he managed many minor and major tasks for our sport. He escorted the German national senior team during the IKF World Korfball Championship 1995 in India. He a committed driver for and during the IKF U23 World Korfball Championship 2004 in Duisburg (finishing with a bronze medal for the U23 German team).
In 2003 “Gebi” (its nickname inside Germany ) was appointed treasurer in the IKF EXCO recognizing his accurate and objective perception. Already affected by his disease but still fighting he continued such engagement inside the IKF till 2007. During the IKF World Korfball Championship in Brno (Czech Republic) in such year IKF President, Dr. Jan Fransoo, thanked him using the phrase “… a real Schatzmeister“.
“We all grieve for a great friend, a fantastic sports guy, and an excellent mediator in Europe. I am sure that Wolfgang’s engagement will leave a mark in our international Korfball family for a long time. “ There are no additions necessary to the words from Dieter Fernow .
The IKF korfball family wishes Birgit, Christian and Bastian as well as your relatives and partners strength for the next period of time.
Korfball was recently featured in a large multi-sport event held in Nantou (TPE). More than 20 sports participated in the three day event including 14 World Games sports. The korfball event attracted entries from nine counties and as well as local officials referees from Hong Kong also took part.
The final round consisted of a round robin series with the top three counties playing each other. The results were very close with two matches having a one goal winning margin and the other went to golden goal. The winners were Taoyuan county. For photos click read more.
IKF President Jan Fransoo yesterday informed the membership of the Association of IOC Recognized International Sports Federations (ARISF) that he will not run for a third term as President when his current term will expire next May. In his letter Fransoo cited that he needs to focus his spare volunteer time on the IKF: “The International Korfball Federation has grown so much in the past decade that we feel it is now the right moment to make next steps towards eventual inclusion in the Olympic Program. For this purpose, my Federation needs my full and undivided attention, at least for the next few years until my current term as IKF President expires in 2015.”
Fransoo (46) conducts his activities as a sport administrator next to a full-time job. Upon his retirement as ARISF President, he will have served on the ARISF Council for 12 years, including 8 years as its President. His decision will also end his membership of the Council of SportAccord, since this is tied to the ARISF Presidency.
The IKF has been informed that Mr Johan Wiegerink has passed away 1 November 2012. Despite the fact he was ill his death came as a schock. He was 67 years of age. Johan Wiegerink was the committed chair of the Local Organising Committee of IKF Europe Korfball Championship in the Netherlands in 2010. The event became a success due to his professional attitude, his indepth knowledge of the korfball community and his ability to mobilise proefessionals and volunteers.
The IKF President, Dr Jan Fransoo, presented him the Pin of Merit on 31 October 2010 in the closing dinner of that very successful event. Johan Wiegerink was awarded member in the Order of Orange Nassau by the Dutch Queen.
Thursday 8 November at 14.00 PM local Dutch time the funeral service will take place in the city of Enschede.
We wish his wife, children, grandchildren and other members of the family strength in the period that is ahead of them. The korfball world will remember him with greatest respect.
