IKF U23 AOKC Quarter finals: HKG, TPE, AUS and CHN to U23WKC

The quarter finals were organised on a cross pool basis with the number 1 in each group playing the number 4 and the number 2 playing the number 3. With only three places available for Asian teams to qualify for next year’s IKF U23 World Korfball Championship it was important that those teams with aspirations to qualify won their match today.

The results were:              PHI – CHN  13 – 34;         TPE – INA    44 – 10;          HKG – MAC     23 – 4 ;  IND  –  AUS    15 – 16

This means that the line –ups for the semi-finals are:

For places 1 – 4
TPE vs AUS (31 July at 13:30) and CHN vs HKG (31 July at 15:20)

For places 5 – 8
INA vs IND (31 July at 17:10) and PHI vs MAC (31 July at 19:00)

Since there are only three Asian teams amongst the semi-finalists for the medal places it also means that TPE, CHN and HKG join AUS in qualifying for the IKF U23 WKC scheduled to take place in the Czech Republic next July. These teams join the six European teams that qualified last year RSA who won the IKF All African Championship earlier this month. The last team, from the Americas, will be known after the IKF U23 Pan-American Championship to be held in Colombia next month.

IKF U23 AOKC Day 2 – China beats Australia

The second day of the IKF U23 AOKC gave us the lowest and the two highest scoring matches of the tournament so far. Despite the score, the low scoring match was very exciting and eventually the teams had to be separated by a golden goal. The Macau China team were the winners 13 – 12 against Indonesia. The highest scoring match so far was the last one of the day where overwhelming favourites, hosts Chinese Taipei, beat Hong Kong China by 53 – 7. The other high scoring match was the first match of the day where we saw India (who only arrived in Hsinchu around 8 am today) play just a few hours later and beat newcomers the Philippines 42 – 16. The other match saw China gain revenge for their 22 – 11 beating by Australia four years ago by winning here 21 – 16.

IKF U23 AOKC Day 1 – Large wins for the favorite teams

The opening day of this event saw only three matches because the Indian team had major travel difficulties. The opening match between Hong Kong China and the Philippines saw the Philippines making their debut in an IKF competition. There was also a debut for a referee from Korea (Pony KIM) acting as the assistant referee. Hong Kong showed their experience and easily won the match 36 – 10 but the total of 46 goals in the opening match looked promising for the rest of the tournament.

The second match had Australia defeating Macau China 34 – 6 and in the last match the experienced China team beat Indonesia who were  also making their debut at this level) 36 – 9

IKF U23 Asia-Oceania Championship to kick off today

The IKF U23 Asia-Oceania Korfball Championship is due to kick off today in Hsinchu (Taiwan), with the first match between the Philippines and Hong Kong China. Organizers are completing the final last minutes preparations for what promises to be an exciting tournament, with the top 3 Asian teams able to qualify for the U23 World Korfball Championship next year in the Czech Republic. Australia have already qualified representing Oceania.

Teams have completed the final day of pre-match trainings yesterday. Host nation Chinese Taipei is the clear favorite for the title, with China, India, Hong Kong China, Australia, and Macau China are the likely teams to contest the remaining medal spots. Indonesia and newcomer Philippines are outsiders in the Championship.

The International Korfball Federation is very happy with the international début of the national team of the Philippines. Excellent development work in the Philippines has been conducted by IKF Asia Secretary General Warman Cheng, and the national team has been prepared and will be coached by Edwin Bouman from the Netherlands.

The match will be followed by the opening ceremony, which will be attended, among others, by Taiwan Sport Minister Dr Ho Jow-Fei, Hsinchu Mayor Lin Chih-Chien, IKF President Dr Jan Fransoo, IKF Asia President Dr Huang Ying-Che, and IKF Secretary General Graham Crafter.

Due to a last minute revision of the match schedule due to logistical problems of one of the teams, the first match PHI-HKG will be played at 1520 local time (720AM GMT). Matches can be watched live on the IKF Channel.
