IKF qualification criteria for The World Games 2025

The upcoming IKF World Korfball Championship 2023 in Taipei will be used as the only qualification event for The World Games 2025 (TWG) in Chengdu, China.

There are eight qualification places available for TWG 2025. The framework aims at having 4 Continents representing Korfball at the TWG 2025 out of the five Continents represented in the IKF WKC 2023 – Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, Oceania. To make this happen, participants from 4 Continents should finish in the top-11 at the IKF WKC 2023.

Therefore, the final ranking at the IKF WKC 2023 decides which National Teams qualify for the TWG 2025, taking into consideration the following criteria:

  1. All qualified teams for the TWG 2025 must participate in the WKC 2023
  2. As host of TWG 2025, CHN must be ranked in top 13 at the WKC 2023 to guarantee the qualification as host of TWG 2025. If CHN does not finish in top 13 of the WKC 2023, a wildcard will be given to be decided by IKF Council vote, taking the interest of quality of the competition, global representation, and marketing impact into account.
  3. If the top 8 ranking, including CHN, consists of participants of at least 4 Continents the top 8 will qualify directly.
  4. If four continents are represented in the Top 11 then
    a. CHN qualifies (if in top 13) but does not count on behalf of Asia
    b. If CHN does not finish in top 13 of the WKC 2023, a wildcard will be given to be decided by IKF Council vote
    c. Considering only Top 11 teams, the highest ranked team from each continent qualify
    d. Starting with the highest ranked team and descending, teams who have not qualified via the steps above are then added until eight places are filled.
  5. If three or two continents are represented in the Top 11 then
    a. CHN qualifies (if in top 13) but does not count on behalf of Asia
    b. If CHN does not finish in top 13 of the WKC 2023, a wildcard will be given to be decided by IKF Council vote
    c. Considering only Top 11 teams, the highest ranked team from each of those continents qualifies
    d. Starting with the highest ranked team and descending, teams who have not qualified via the steps above are then added until eight places are filled.
  6. If only one continent is represented in the Top 11 then
    a. CHN qualifies (if in top 13) but does not count on behalf of Asia
    b. If CHN does not finish in top 13 of the WKC 2023, a wildcard will be given to be decided by IKF Council vote
    c. Starting with the highest ranked team and descending, teams who have not qualified via the step above are then added until eight places are filled.

Election of Members IKF Athletes Committee 2023-2027

During the IKF World Korfball Championship new members of the IKF Athletes Committee will be elected. The task of the IKF Athletes Committee is to give advice, both requested and unrequested, to the IKF Council regarding all matters that it deems appropriate.

The IKF Council will propose to the General meeting to change the IKF Statutes to increase the number of members in the Athletes Committee to five, and allow for the inclusion of the Athletes Committee chair in the IKF Council with a voting right. This is in line with common practice in the Olympic Movement. This needs to be formally approved by the General Meeting to be instated with immediate effect on October 28.

Elections will be held during the IKF World Korfball Championship 2023, on Sunday 22 October 2023 at the FULLON Hotel Taipei East, Chinese Taipei. Athletes are eligible if they have played in any of the official qualifying events for the IKF World Korfball Championship 2023, or/and are participating in the IKF World Korfball Championship 2023.

The new IKF Athlete’s Committee should:

  • Consist of five members;
  • Have at least two members of each gender;
  • Have members that represent at least three of the IKF’s regions (America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Oceania);
  • Have the chair as a voting member of the IKF Council;
  • Report directly to the IKF President;
  • Receive a small budget from the IKF for operating expenses, but will not meet in person.

The elected athletes will hold office until the IKF World Korfball Championship 2027.

The elections will take place according to the following procedures;

  1. Each of the (maximum) 336 athletes that participate at the IKF World Korfball Championship 2023 has the opportunity to cast one vote;
  2. The two female athletes with the highest number of votes shall be a member of the IKF Athletes Committee;
  3. The two male athletes with the highest number of votes shall be a member of the IKF Athletes Committee;
  4. If the athletes mentioned under 2 and 3 are all from the same region, the one with the least votes will not become a member of the committee and will be replaced by the person of the same gender receiving the highest number of votes from any of the other four regions. Unless there are no candidates from at least three regions.
  5. If the athletes mentioned under 2, 3 and 4 are from three different regions, then the person receiving the highest number of votes from any of the other three regions shall be a member of the IKF Athletes Committee;
  6. If the athletes mentioned under 2, 3 and 4 are from three different regions, then the person receiving the next highest number of votes shall be a member of the IKF Athletes Committee.

Nominations

Any of the athletes that are eligible can be nominated as a candidate. The nomination can be done by the National Organisation, with the explicit consent of the athlete involved, or by the athlete him/herself, by filling out the nomination form and sending it by email to the IKF Office (office@ikf.org) no later than October 16, 2023. The nomination form is available for National Federations by request to the IKF Office.

Each National Organisation may nominate at most one male and one female candidate for the election. Should more candidates within a country nominate themselves, then the National Organisation is responsible for organising an election among the athletes representing that country in the IKF WKC 2023.

In case less than two nominations have been received from a continent, the president of the respective continental confederation shall be invited to make such nominations.

IKF Korfball Champions League Round 1 Recap

The first two event of the IKF Korfball Champions League 2023-24 have been played last weekend. 14 teams competed for 2 places in the IKF Korfball Champions League Round 2, and 4 places in the IKF Korfball Champions League Satellite Final.

IKF Korfball Champions League Round 1-A

The IKF KCL R1A took place in Lisbon, Portugal, from 21-23 September. 6 teams competed against each other in a round-robin format. CK Vallparadís from Catalonia and Schweriner KC from Germany won their first three matches and faced each other on the final day, in what was the expected deciding match for the ranking of positions one and two. Schweriner took a four-goal lead, but Vallparadis turned things around and took over the initiative in Q3 with a three-goal gap. Schweriner came close, but Vallparadis secured their win by a very close 15-14 end score. The team ended the tournament with a win over CCCD Carnaxide and thus qualified for the IKF Korfball Champions League Round 2. Schweriner KC and CCCD Carnaxide qualified for the IKF Korfball Champions League Satellite Final by claiming the second and third place. Yildiz Teknik Üniversitelilier became fourth, SJBAGB fifth, and 1908 SZAC Budapest completed the ranking on sixth place.

IKF Korfball Champions League Round 1-B

The IKF KCL R1B took place in Cardiff, Wales, from 22-24 September. 8 teams were present, but Koceali University Sport Club participated out of competition. Unfortunately, they could not get a team complete due to VISA issues. The team’s athletes that travelled to Cardiff were complemented by local players. The teams competed in two groups, advancing from there to the semi-finals, finals and other ranking matches. Group A winner Clube de Corfebol de Oeiras defeated Cardiff City & Met KC (number 2 group B) in the semi-final, where it faced FJEP Bonson. Bonson defeated SKK Prievidza Dolphins (winner Group B) in their semi-final. Clube Corfebol de Oeiras proved to be the strongest competitor in the event, by winning the final 23 to 4. The match for third place decided which team would claim the last qualification spot for the IKF KCL Satellite Final. Cardiff City & Met KC and the Dolphins were a great match for each other, but eventually, the Slovak champion claimed the victory. The ranking was completed by Tornadoes Korfball Club Academy (fifth place), Glasgow Korfball Club (sixth place), and Newport Centurions KC (seventh place).

The IKF Korfball Champions League Round 2 will be organised in Marki, Poland, from 28 November – 2 December. The IKF Korfball Champions League Satellite Final will be organised 18-20 January in Antalya, Türkiye.

LIVE DRAW

The late withdrawal of Kékvölgy SE from Hungary led to a change in the original tournament set-up for the IKF KCL R1A. The teams will play each other in a round-robin format, but the qualification criteria for the successive KCL events remain unchanged.

The live draw for the IKF Korfball Champions League Round 1 took place on July 6. Through this draw, the teams were divided into the two Round 1s, in Cardiff and Lisbon.

Teams were allocated to the events by drawing in pairs. These pairs were based on the IKF Korfball Champions League ranking, which is based on the previous season. Two teams were already placed; Welsh champion Cardiff City Korfball Club and the runner-up Newport Centurions. The Welsh Korfball Association is hosting the event in collaboration with Cardiff City Korfball Club, which was therefore placed in the IKF KCL Round 1-B. To get to 8 teams, Newport Centurions were invited as extra participant and was therefore also placed in the IKF KCL R1B. The two qualified Portuguese teams are both not hosting the event, and are therefore included in the draw instead of having a fixed place in Lisbon.
