Day 3 Final games

Day 3 Final reviews

Brno – Marmara 21-11 (16-5)

Two teams whose national federations will need to participate in the first round with the reigning champions competed for the places 7/8 on the final day.

With an additional two minutes per quarter higher scores were possible. And that was exactly what happend on the Czech side in the first half. Good focus in combination with less pressure by defenders made that the match was played long before the final whistle.

It was an occasion for some reserve players to show their skills.

Congratulations to both teams!

Benfica – Szac GG 13-12 (12-12) (8-8)

Two teams that had hoped for more struggled for the fifth place. But especially in Q1 the battle was situated on the defending side with a low score as a result (2-3)

Szac for a short period of time dominated and created a small advance. Time for Benfica to raise the level and to have it all square at half time.

Same scenario in the second half. Much enthusiasm, no success. This game had to be decided by a golden goal. And so it did!

After many minutes it was Joana Faria that scored the winning goal.

Trojans – Pegasus 25-11 (11-6)

It has been a while since we had a clash between the traditional champion teams from England and Germany like it was always the case in the early days of the Europa Cup outdoor.

The English played one of the best tournaments and also now they were master of the game. Pegasus attacks were too transparant and the few shots, even from close by, did not find their way into the korf.

It must be said that at that time the scoring percentage of Trojans was extremely high. With 5 ahead at half time, Germans would still have hope.

Same scenario in the second half, Trojans clearly the better team and Germans trying to reverse the setting.

As a conclusion we may state that this is a well earned bronze for Trojans and that Pegasus earns respect for the efforts that were made to give a strong opponent a hard time.

Photos by Marco Spelten – actiefotografie.nl & Gertrude Vries – korfbalfoto.nl

Top/Solar Compleet – Boeckenberg 31-16 (15-9)

The question was how long the Belgian champion would be able to keep the margin as close as possible. And, it must be said, in the first quarter this went quite well until dominance in rebound from the Dutch and uncontrolled personal defence on the other side resulted in 9-4

In a pure mathematical  perspective the second quarter saw nearly a winner with an accurate Top in the beginning and a better scoring Boeckenberg towards the end.

What is always a problem when playing Dutch teams, is difference in length giving attacks oceans of time to prepare shots and to give confidence to shooters. Boeckenberg did what was possible but was insufficient to create surprises (21-12 after Q3)

Match over and moments for other players to have a taste of topkorfball.

Congratulations to the KBKB for a perfect tournament. A better final would have been a beautiful present but Top was too outstanding.

Day 2 Morning games

Day 2 Morning reviews

Benfica – Trojans GG: 13-14 (regular: 13-13) (half time: 8-10)

We should be able to plan the key games for the evening session. Obviously this match was decisive for places 3 and 4. This means struggle, passion and effort between two teams equally strong.

None of the competitors could create a margin and there was never a decrease of tension. All what is needed for a top game was there, close defence, attacks interrupted by the sound of the shot clock, blocked shots and beautiful tactical plays. The smallest of margins with 5′ to go in favour of Trojans forced the Portugese to take risks and the English were not prepared to suffer from the same mistakes as before against Boeckenberg. (12-13)

With 11″ to go Benfica managed to equal the score with a golden goal scenario as a result. The first English attack being unsuccessful, the second one was the good one. After what they showed in the previous matches, maybe a well earned victory.

So typical for korfball that losers and winners embraced each other despite joy and disappointment!

Photos by Marco Spelten – actiefotografie.nl – korfbalfoto.nl

Brno – Pegasus 15-17 (6-6)

Also now one could expect a close game. And although the tempo was much slower with less scoring, it remained an interesting confrontation. One could feel that this match would only start after the break.

After some tactical instructions of the coaches we noticed more speed but mixed with rougher actions  and infringements but also more goals. This is exactly what was needed to please spectators. The Germans , due to a better rebound in attack, took the lead in Q3. Too many easy shots from a close range were missed by Brno attackers with time unavoidably running out.

Photos by Marco Spelten – actiefotografie.nl – korfbalfoto.nl

Boeckenberg – Marmara 16-13 (10-5)

The fact that after the first quarter the Belgian champion had the lead (2-1) against a qualifier from the first round forces to say that Belgian korfball is going through a crisis.

Luckily there was a bunch of sheering school children to encourage the Belgians where the present korfball community was astonished by the performance of the Turkish team that was able to score 13 goals!

Photos by Marco Spelten – actiefotografie.nl – korfbalfoto.nl

Szac – Top/Solar Compleet (2-10)

It was an opportunity for the Hungarians to show the strong progress they made the last years against a B team of Top.

As indicated earlier Szac did not play their best tournament, leaving the best players on te bench. The reserves still have a long way to go. Defence maybe was all right but just two scores score after 16′ is not very inspiring.

Top, on the other hand, amused the public with unconventional attacks with one handed running in shots.

The second half was the better one fro Szac. Was it not for the playing level, shots went in more easily to stroll to an acceptable final result

Photos by Marco Spelten – actiefotografie.nl – korfbalfoto.nl

Day 2 Evening games

Day 2 Evening reviews

Benfica – Brno 9-8 (4-6)

The match that would decide who was going to play for places 7-8 or 5-6 seemed to be in favour for Brno at least in the first half.

And even later it remained unpredictable what be the outcome. Two teams eager to avoid first rounds played too carefully and therefore too slow. This made it easy for defenders to prevent opponents from shooting and on top we marked many attacks without shots.

At the end it was the inspiration of the best Portugese player that sentenced Brno to a trip to Saint Etienne.

Photos by Marco Spelten – actiefotografie.nl – korfbalfoto.nl

Marmara – Szac 7-17 (4-9)

Marmara completely missed their start and was condemned to a pursuit all the way through the match.

It was very unfortunate that Marmara was unable to repeat a previous performance which would have given a hard time to the Hungarians. At the end it became a walk over.

One may hope that Marmara will seize a chance during a first round tournament to qualify for 2020.

Photos by Marco Spelten – actiefotografie.nl – korfbalfoto.nl

Trojans – Top/Solar Compleet 5-21 (2-9)

What can you say in favour of a team that scores only 2 goals in the first and three in the second half time? That it was overpowered by a Dutch champion that is ready for the final!

Trojans played a good tournament so far but it was swiped from the floor by a quick, athletic and powerful Top with an outstanding female scoring machine.

Trojans, with their minds set on the match of the day after, did what they could but that was not enough to prevent the opponent to enjoy the public with dynamic korfball. An opportunity for the English to bring in reserve players to savour high level play.

Photos by Marco Spelten – actiefotografie.nl – korfbalfoto.nl

Boeckenberg – Pegasus 17-12 (9-7)

Much attention for this match. Interesting to find out whether the Germans, like in the Europeans, were able to upset the Belgians. When this was maybe the case in the beginning, too many bad decisions and passes, gave Boeckenberg the occasion to create a gap (6-3)

When shot clocks were replaced due to technical failure Boeckenberg immediately scored two perfectly countered by the Germans keeping the game on the highest level of tension.

Boeckenberg, at the start of Q3, now played the better korfball, whereas Germans were trying with individual actions. With an unstoppable Nick Janssens, after a sabbatical period, the match was decided minutes before the final signal.

Day 1 Morning games

Day 1 Morning Reviews

Marmara – Benfica 8-23 (7-9)

In the beautiful sports venue of Flanders West, a region where the KBKB as an organiser has just one local club, the edition of the IKF Cup took a start with what could be an interesting match between Marmara from Turkey and Benfica from Portugal.

The first half this scenario was respected with an unpredictable outcome. In the second however Benfica gave a push on the gas pedal with a big margin as a result.

Szac – Brno 16-10 (6-3)

With the excellent performance from the Hungarian champion in the first round in mind Brno was facing a strong opponent.Undoubtedly Szac is the best team from the recent past in Hungary whereas the Czechs with some older players could not create a surprise.

It must be said that Czech Republic slowly regains status within their country and, when the number of top teams will increase, we expect then back on the highest level.

Boeckenberg – Trojans 13-12 (7-9)

With the recent results of the Belgian national team in mind, Trojans fielded the best team. This turned out to be a good idea. Boeckenberg had more scoring opportunities, but the Trojans were all the mote accurate!

As Belgian shooting became better in the second half Trojans had to look for solutions. As the attacks failed to keep the ball in possession long enough to create free chances, the lead went to the opponent (11-10 at the start of the fourth quarter)

When everyone was expecting the GG, an uncontrolled move from a Trojan (disrespect of the distance during a penalty) was decisive for the “match of the day”

Top/Solar Compleet 14-6 (6-4)

Is korfball in progress when even Dutch B teams have trouble beating opponents? If this is the case the IKF has a bright future on the competition side.

In a recent past the German national squad did well and it may be that this was reflected on the German champion team. It kept the gap close till even after the break.

The third quarter was all in favour of Top (11-6). Pegasus became a victim of their own enthusiasm with too many infringements and not enough fluid play. No surprise at the end! If it was not for a serious shoulder injury on the German side.

Day 1 Evening games

Day 1 Evening Reviews

Trojans – Marmara 21-6 (12-2)

Trojans recovered well from a major disillusion and left nothing for a weak opponent. In every part of the sport, both scenically and tactically, they were superior. Shots came with much confidence and accuracy resulting in an enormous gap.

Time for Trojans to test some reserve players giving more opportunities to the Turkish team.

Pegasus – Szac 11-8 (7-3)

It could have been a very high level game  but it never came to excitement. Szac had a total off day and the Germans, as a pledge to their injured team mate, never had problems.

A slow paste, bad shooting from both sides did not thrill spectators.

Nevertheless the general level of all teams seems to increase although this was not obvious in this slow match.

Boeckenberg – Benfica 13-6 (6-4)

No problems this time for a highly concentrated Boeckenberg that gave away few chances. Benfica could keep the gap very narrow in the beginning but after the second quarter the Belgian attackers were very successful whereas the defenders prevented the Portugese to take easy shots.

No more close games to satisfy the audience. On the other hand the goal of the match was scored by the IKF secretary general, Joana Faria, after a beautiful assist ion het brother.

Top/Solar Compleet – Brno 25-8 (14-5)

How to resist the supremacy of the giants from The Netherlands? What to do about the easy scoring? Questions that remained unanswered. 9-2 after the first quarter was just the start of a Czech Calvary.

With fluid moves Top showed that this is the team that would be difficult to keep from a next European title!

Upcoming events: IKF ECup 2019 and IKF EShield 2019

Since that the last IKF event of 2018 had been played a few weeks ago, it is time to look foward to the first IKF events of 2019. Traditionally, these are the IKF Europa Cup and the IKF Europa Shield, both club events.

IKF Europa Cup 2019

The IKF Europa Cup 2019 will be held in Kortrijk, Belgium, from the 10th of January up untill the 12th of January. During this event, national champions from six European countries will compete, as well as two teams who qualified during the IKF Europa Cup First Round in September 2018. The eight teams are divided into two pools:

Pool A Pool B
Kon. Boeckenberg KC (BEL) TOP/SolarCompleet (NED)
NC BENFICA (POR) KK Brno (CZE)
Trojans Korfball Club (ENG) SG Pegasus Rommerscheid 1991 e.V. (GER)
Marmara University (TUR) 1908 SZAC Budapest (HUN)

The last two editions were won by the Dutch national champion TOP/SolarCompleet, who will not be satisfied this year by anything else than a third trophy in a row. However, the other teams are determined to showcase their best play and to claim the victory at last.

IKF Europa Shield 2019

The 17th edition of the IKF Europa Shield will be organized by the Czech Korfball Association in Prostějov, from the 25th till the 27th of January. The Czech Republic is represented by two club teams during the event, and those are accompanied by club teams from Englang, Hungary, Turkey, Catalonia, Germany and Portugal. The teams are divided into two pools:

Pool A Pool B
Bec Korfball Club (ENG) Schweriner-Korfball-Club e.V. 67 (GER)
Grupo Desportivo dos Bons Dias (POR) CK Vallparadis (CAT)
KCC SOKOL České Budějovice (CZE) Szentendrei Honvéd Kinizsi SE (HUN)
Haydarpasa Lisesi Sport Club (TUR) SK RG Prostějov (CZE)

In 2018, KV Adler Rauxel won the IKF EShield. With them being absent this year, the chances of the runner-up of 2018, Bec Korfball Club, seem to have increased. The English club team has won the Eshield in 2017 and 2016 and surerly will give it their all to win this edition too.

However, since the IKF EShield has been characterized by close results in resent years, exciting  matches resulting in surprising results can be expected during this edition.

5. Cardiff City & Met (WAL)

It was a very well organised tournament in a beautiful, fully equipped venue. The Turkish federation may be proud with what was achieved and will surely be approached for more.

The referees, together with the assistants, performed well under the guidance of Jorge Alves, the IKF assessor. The jury left a legacy by instructing many local members.

The IKF had the opportunity to have informal conversations with the team managers about their worries and their hopes to improve future events and tournaments.

DAY 3 REVIEWS:

GAME #9: Marmara University SC (TUR) –1908 SZAC KSE (HUN)  10 – 19 (5-12)

Statistics: worldkorfball.org/matches/marmara-university-sport-club-1908-szac-kse-2248

After what we experienced from the previous matches, SZAC was clearly the favourite. Marmara had trouble the day before to beat Bonson. However with the first place of the tournament at stake the home public had high hopes to obtain at least a good result.

The Hungarians on the other hand from the very start played their best korfball, claiming the first price without any doubt.

It will be interesting to find out whether this team is able to challenge the traditional European champion teams next year in January in Belgium.

Finally we must congratulate the Marmara team for the good result giving access to the best 8 club teams of Europe.

GAME #10: CK Castellbisbal (CAT) – Cardiff City & Met KC (WAL) 19 – 4 (11-1)

Statistics: worldkorfball.org/matches/club-korfbal-castellbisbal-cardiff-city-met-korfball-club-2249

The match of honour for the Catalans. An excellent sparring partner for the Welsh.

It was not the most exciting match of the tournament. Only, because there was price giving for female and male top scorers, Castellbisbal aimed for a good result.

Cardiff seized the opportunity to field reserve players. For some of them their first international experience.

In general it was a very well organised tournament in a beautiful, fully equipped venue. The Turkish federation may be proud with what was achieved and will surely be approached for more.

IKF Europa Cup 2019 1st Round: Day 2 results, reviews & images

Day 2 at the IKF Europa Cup 2019 First Round in Kocaeli brought us 6 different games after Friday’s two first matches. These were today’s games, all live on www.worldkorfball.org.

DAY 2 REVIEWS:

GAME #3: Bonson FJEP (FRA) – CK Castellbisbal (CAT) 6 – 20 (5-11)

Statistics: worldkorfball.org/matches/bonson-fjep-club-korfbal-castellbisbal-2242

Two attacks, two goals! (1-1) An amazing start from Bonson in the winning mood countered by the Catalans, struggling to keep chances to qualify for the final round in January.

It must be said that Castellbisbal was concentrated from the very start and successful shooting (Irene Figueroa) lead to what would later turn out to be a decisive result. Bonson had difficulties to disturb the speedy tempo from the opponent. However every Catalan mistake often resulted in a French score. Unfortunately a successful buzzer shot was not accorded due to a right decision of the Turkish referee.

In the second half the match was more or less controlled by the leading team. Bonson was incapable to narrow the gap. On the other hand multiple substitutions did not affect the quality of the Catalan game resulting in an obvious final score.

A final remark. With respect to the winners of the match, spectators saw one of the best recent French club teams. In this respect it is appreciated that a former player, Denis Dancert, decided to stay committed as a coach after finishing his career as a player.

GAME #4: Cardiff City & Met KC (WAL) – 1908 SZAC KSE (HUN) 4 – 23 (1-13)

Statistics: worldkorfball.org/matches/cardiff-city-met-korfball-club-1908-szac-kse-2243

It is going good with korfball in Hungary and one would be curious if this could be shown in the first game of the tournament. And indeed, from the beginning the Hungarians took the initiative forcing Cardiff to take a time out to rearrange the defence.

For Cardiff, with matches against the Turkish and the Catalan champion ahead, it was an all or nothing game. The Hungarians dominated the game from the start with a clear score even at the end of the first half. But then the team is the major supplier of players for the national squad that may dream to qualify for the IKF WKC in October.

Because of the difference in score Cardiff gave up all hope whereas SZAC started to prepare for more crucial matches ahead.

GAME #5: 1908 SZAC KSE (HUN) – Bonson FJEP (FRA) 23 – 12 (12-7)

Statistics: worldkorfball.org/matches/1908-szac-kse-bonson-fjep-2244

Courage! That is the ingredient that is needed when you compete against a much too strong opponent. And, without minimizing the merits of ZSAC, the French did what they could to keep the score acceptable.

Sometimes it is important to reset the goal when there is so much domination. Trying to score half of the goals of the opponent may then be a success. And the French succeeded to obtain this result against SZAC that would keep all options open to qualify for Belgium next year.

GAME #6: Marmara University SC (TUR) – Cardiff City & Met KC (WAL) 20 – 4 (11-3)

Statistics: worldkorfball.org/matches/marmara-university-sport-club-cardiff-city-met-korfball-club-2245

Also here a strong team from Turkey had no problems with an opponent that still has a long way to go. As it happens then often scores from the underdog are cheered much louder than beautiful athletic movements of others.

With upcoming key matches in mind, Marmara slowly strolled to an easy win without too much resistance from the Welsh.

GAME #7: CK Castellbisbal (CAT) – 1908 SZAC KSE (HUN) 12 – 17 (8-8)

Statistics: worldkorfball.org/matches/club-korfbal-castellbisbal-1908-szac-kse-2246

The most interesting match of the second day would decide whether the Catalan champion would still have a chance to qualify for the final round. Only by beating the opponent , that could be achieved.

The Catalan topscorers Parròn and Figueroa were focussed from the start to create a small gap (7-4) This was the sign for the Hungarian coach to bring more rebound power in defence to disturb these dangerous attackers. And with success! (7-6)

With a missed penalty on the Hungarian side the first half promised a clash for later.

SZAC was clearly the better team after the break. The defenders gave pressure on the shooters with team mates unable to take over (8-12)

Despite several other missed penalties from SZAC the gap steadily grew to an insurmountable 10-16

With this result SZAC may order tickets for Belgium.

GAME #8: Marmara University SC (TUR) – Bonson FJEP (FRA) 12 – 10 (7-7)

Statistics: worldkorfball.org/matches/marmara-university-sport-club-bonson-fjep-2247

The French needed two attacks to force a 0-2 lead. Changing zones brought Marmara back in the game. One could have thought that, from then on, Marmara would overwhelm their opponents but, as been said before, with the right spirit this French team would not let go (5-6)

One would wonder whether Bonson would be able to continue this way after tea.

It took 5 minutes for a team to score. Turkish attempts remained unanswered and Bonson now had more faith than skill (10-8) Time now was running out for Bonson. Due to a serious injury the team had a late revival but not enough to keep Marmara from victory.

Now that the qualified teams are known the third day will only decide who will be the winner of the first round. We look forward to see what spectacle these teams have to offer.

IKF Europa Cup 2019 1st Round: Day 1 results, reviews & images

The 1st day at the IKF Europa Cup 2019 First Round in Kocaeli has brought the following results:

day1_halfresults

GAME #1: Marmara University SC (TUR) 11 – CK Castellbisbal (CAT) 7

Statistics: worldkorfball.org/matches/marmara-university-sport-club-club-korfbal-castellbisbal-2240

In the beautiful sports venue of Kocaeli on a warm Indian summer evening, a thrilling opening match was disputed between two teams eager to qualify for the IKF Europa Cup final round.

On paper one could expect that the Catalan champion had not much to fear from a less experienced opponent. However, from the very start the Turkish team gave a lot of pressure in defense and after a short study round, Marmara found its way to the korf. The score at half time (5-2) came as a surprise for most while others had the impression that not the best Catalan players had started.

Very accurate shooting came as an answer to many Catalan substitutions that brought no relief on the chaotic play. Marmara continued to stretch the attacks and, towards the end, time running out became an enemy for Castellbisbal.

GAME #2: Cardiff City & Met Korfball Club (WAL) 12 – Bonson FJEP (FRA) 14

Statistics: worldkorfball.org/matches/cardiff-city-met-korfball-club-bonson-fjep-2241

If the playing level was lower in this match the players enthusiasm was not. A quick start of the Welsh somewhat overwhelmed the opponent but it was just that Bonson needed more time to get into the game.

The match was very much enjoyed both by players and spectators as they saw two teams with equal strength which lead to an unpredictable final outcome at half time.

Some misunderstandings with substitutions in the French compartment resulted in loss of concentration creating chances for Cardiff to create a gap. When Bonson regained confidence it became the better team with better ball recuperation in defence.

Cardiff was physically not able to prevent French shooters from creating a decisive gap.
