Mady Tims IWGA athlete of the month

Today the International World Games Association published the announcement:

Congratulations to Mady Tims, IWGA Athlete of the Month for April 2015. The Korfball player (38) from the Netherlands gave her farewell at the Dutch Korfball League Finale on 11 April. More than 10,000 spectators at the sold-out Ahoy arena in Rotterdam experienced the touching goodbye.  She left the court right after her PKC/SWK Groep teammate, Johannis Schott, scored four seconds before the end the winning point.

With a huge cheer from her fans, white tulips from her teammates, and tears in her eyes, it was a moment to be cherished. Her club, PKC, won the final match against TOP by a score of 22 to 21. Mady Tims left the court as a champion. She helped to make it happen by scoring a point  in the final. It was the 500th korf in her career as a player for PKC.

The English commentator of the match described her as the “most fantastic player in the world of Korfball”. Jan Fransoo, President of the International Korfball Federation, called her, “a korfball icon”. She said after the match and her emotional farewell, “Korfball is my passion”. She added, “There are so many great moments I can look back to.”

Indeed, “Lady” (her nickname) Tims is a three-time European Champion, and three-time World Champion with the national team of the Netherland. The Dutch team, with her help, won the TWG 2005 Gold Medal in Duisburg, Germany.

“Winning the title with PKC made my last match so special”, she said after the match in Rotterdam in April. That’s the way she likes to step down. In 2011 when she retired from the Dutch national team, it was the final of the World Korfball Championship in China. The title match against the archrival Belgium was her final international competition. She scored three times for her team, which won 32:26.

IKF ECup day 3

Bonson FJEP – Edinburgh Mavericks 17 – 9

If the IKF European Competitions Working Group decides to extend the schedule for the next edition of the IKF ECup this result would be decisive for a place next year.

Although the French seemed to head for an easy win Edinburgh managed to equal the score just after half time. At that time one was unable to tell who would be the winner. Until Bonson found the way to the korf again leaving Edinburg with empty hands.

Trojans KC – Schweriner KC 21 – 20

It looked that each team dominated one half of the match. Germans were the best in the first without this being displayed on the scoreboard.

One could expect that Trojans would invest on the female defense side but this was not good enough to prevent German girls to score many goals.

On the other hand English shooting was much better now and finally this was the aspect for Trojans to clinch the game.

Vallparadis – Kocaeli University 26 – 10

The Catalans made it clear from the beginning that they would go for a  big score and therefore they fielded a stong team.

Kocaeli realised that this game was another step in a learning process and what seemed difficult in the beginning went better in the second half.

Nevertheless Vallparadis without compassion gave a clear message that they will give any opponent a struggle in a near future.

Top/Quoratio – KK Brno 37 – 15

A battle between courage and excellence.

Benfica NC – Royal Scaldis 17 – 23

If ever there was a doubt about a place for the final match, only at the start of the match this was a feasable sceanrio. Once Scaldis passed the observing period of the tactical plan of the opponent, the Belgians made clear that there is still a difference between expectation and reality. At half time, as many years in past, a predictable final became a fact. (7-14)

In the second half spectators enjoyed a good game, preparational for both towards finals and semis, Nothing wrong with that except that some hoped for a heavier combat.

IKF ECup day 2

Edinburgh – Bonson FJEP 11 – 16

It must be said. It is a point of attention for a new European working group to create schedules where teams of equal strength can play for results with small margins. As this was the case in this match, both players and officials enjoyed the performance of the teams. The French finally got away with the victory although there is still a chance for the champion of Scotland to reverese the situation in the best of two.

Brno – Trojans KC 19 – 18

A good start from Brno, a team that came in as a substitute for the champion of Czech Republic, resulted in an early lead. 10 minutes before half time Trojans closed the gap and took over.

A more stylish way of playing of Trojans against the power play of Brno, at half time it was difficult to predict the outcome (10-8)

The Czechs had their best period after tea. The Brooks brothers worked hard but forgot the most important issue of an attack. No wonder Brno felt safe with 15-8 and 10 minutes to go

Trojans never underestimated the danger and did their utmost to secure a good position for the final ranking.

The Czechs now played the 25 shot clock seconds till the signal of the buzzer reducing the scoring opportunities of Trojans (18-16 with 3 minutes to go)

A thrilling game, good refereeing, dedicated players.

Benfica – Vallparadis 22 – 18

The battle of the Iberian peninsula was closely watched by many spectators and more specific by the Belgian team from Scaldis.

Vallparadis, after a succesful start, could not keep up with the rythm imposed by the opponent and called for an early time out to reset tactics (8-5)

More Catalan ball recuperation disturbed Portugese attacks even to end with the sound of the shot clock buzzer.

Difficult to say which was the better team at half time (11-10)

The teams performed so well and were so eager to win that both were unable to create a big margin. Some mistakes in defense were penalised by good reffing. At the end Benfica was the winner after a game that had all to offer to an exciting crowd of spectators.

Top/Quoratio – Kocaeli 39 – 9

Not much excitement here. The Turkish team has confirmed that they are in progress and Top seems ready to deal with any obstacle on the way to glory.

Scaldis – Schweriner 25 – 15

A bad injury from “Diamond” Patty Peeters and a serious effort from the German B-team were the main facts of the first half.

In the second half Scaldis slowly but surely strolled towards an easy victory.

IKF ECup 2015 day 1

Trojans – Kocaeli 17 – 8

The opening game of the 49th edition of the IKF Europacup showed no suprise. It had to be said that the Turkish team has made some progress but this was surely insufficient for the Trojans to worry about.

Schweriner – Vallparadis (20-21 golden goal)

Second match of the day promised to be a clash between he champion teams from Germany and Catalonia.

The Catalans were master of the game at the start but Schweriner slowly narrowed the gap towards halt time (8-10)

The match had all a spectator could hope for. Many goals, quick movements and much emotion. With 12′ to go no one could predict the outcome of this game. A magnificent German buzzer shot, the ball did not even touch the korf, followed by two succesful attacks reversed the situation with Schweriner now in the lead.

Not for long however. Vallparadis, determined not to let go, took over despite a yellow card for a female player. What a neutral crowd hoped for became inevitable, an equal score at the end (20-20) and a golden goal as a result. It took some time before the final whistle with both teams nervous to keep ball possession. Finally a long distance shot from the “yellow” Catalan player was decisive for the 20-21 victory.

Kocaeli – Edinburgh 11 – 7

In the first half the better chances were for the Turkish champion. This resulted in a comfortable lead at half time (6-2). Kocaeli was master of the rebound. Endinburgh put in a lot of effort but there was a clear lack of tactical structure.

Both teams played a very static game. Edinburgh managed more or less to close the gap not enough however to keep Koacaeli from a first victory.

Former coach Daniel De Rudder, on leave from the hospital today, must be proud.

Schweriner – Bonson 18 – 9

A very slow game between two teams that clearly missed athletic skills. Schweriner, eager to deal with the deception earlier that day, was the best team. Bonson, still under the impression of recent developments in their country, just struggled to keep the gap as close as possible. The main aim of both teams will be the ranking in the coming days of the tournament.

Edinburgh – Trojans 4 – 17

Edinburg was not capable to ennoy the English opponents. There is still a long way to go to enjoy the spilt of the korfball community in Great Britain. Anyway the “best of two” between the French and the Scottish champion promises to be close games.

Bonson – Vallparadis 6 – 33

The French at half time already realised that this game was to consider as a training session for the struggle for the final ranking (1-19).

They must have enjoyed the opening ceremony where the IKF speaker expressed his compassion for what recently struck the French nation.

Due to internet bandwith problems during Day 1 that didn’t allow live web streaming, we recorded all IKFECup15 Day1 games. They are uploaded to IKF’s youtube channel. These problems will be solved in Day 2.
