All ready for the 1st IKF Beach Korfball World Cup (Asia)

From 9 to 10 March 2019, the Hong Kong China Korfball Association is hosting the first edition of the IKF Beach Korfball World Cup (Asia) 2019 that will take place during this weekend in Hong Kong’s Tin Yip Road Park Artificial Sand Court. This is a great step forward in the international development of beach korfball. With this event added to the IKF Competition Calender, two Beach Korfball World Cups will be organized in 2019.

schedule_twitter

Although this will be the first edition of the IKF Beach Korfball World Cup in Asia, the national korfball federation of Hong Kong has plenty experience with organising successful beach korfball tournaments. Starting in 2000, the federation has annually organized a beach korfball event for both seniors and juniors. Apart from the first edition, the tournament was organised at Repulse Beach every year. Due to its popularity among tourists, this venue served as the perfect place to promote (beach) korfball in Hong Kong and beyond. That participants of that tournament were mostly from Hong Kong, although occasionally, teams from Macau and Taiwan also entered the competition. The first edition of the IKF Beach Korfball World Cup (Asia) is therefore organized by an experienced host, and will be of a more international character than the previous tournaments.

There will be two categories at the IKF BKWC (Asia); Open Group and University Group. The Open Group participants will compete for the IKF World Cup Title, whereas the University Group pool will be an official IKF Recognized competition.

OPEN GROUP (5): China, Hong Kong, Japan, Chinese Taipei and Thailand.

UNIVERSITY GROUP (4): China, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei and Thailand.

The matches in the Open Group will be played on the first day of the event. The University Group matches will be played at the second day of the tournament.

Dot Sport new domain name IKF websites

The International Korfball Federation (IKF), has decided to acquire a new domain name portfolio for its websites; “.sport” The .sport Internet extension replaces the .org domain and is a project of the Sport community.

Effectively this means that the domain name of the three current IKF websites have been amended:

  • korfball.sport: Main IKF website with all organisational and general korfball information
  • worldkorfball.sport: IKF tournament website with tournament information, statistics and live streams
  • beachkorfball.sport: IKF beach korfball website with all information about beach korfball (events)

The project is entrusted to the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), who manages and operates the whole project. GAISF, established in 1967, is the umbrella organisation for both Olympic and non-Olympic international sports federations. GAISF includes 92 full members (international sports federations; including the IKF) and 17 associate members (organisations which conduct activities closely related to the international sports federations). GAISF’s mission is to support, promote and serve its members and the global sport community by providing services in various fields, including digital development.

In the crowded and complex world of the internet, the use of a .sport domain gives the IKF a greater degree of visibility and searchability and, because of the criteria applied by GAISF, confers approval and membership of an exclusive community. Possessing a unique and identifiable domain is a symbol of each organisation’s trust, authenticity and visibility within the sports movement, and offers successful applicants a significant brand-building tool with increased commercial opportunities.

Since the launch of the. sport initiative in September, when GAISF officially began accepting applications, over 200 organisations have registered for a domain. This includes major events organisers, brands, broadcasters, media outlets as well as other International Sport Federations.

Tournament set-up and draw criteria IKF World Korfball Championship 2019

The IKF World Korfball Championship (WKC) 2019 is getting closer and closer. Today, we announce the tournament set-up and the pool draw criteria.

The 20 participating countries start playing in five pools of four countries. The top three of each pool and the best number four qualify for the round of 16 and stay in the race to become the World Korfball Champion 2019. The remaining four countries will be playing against each other in a round-robin system, with a final at the end, to determine their position in the final ranking (position 17 – 20). The exact match schedule after the group stage will be announced closer to the draw in April.

The best number four will be decided following the rules stated in the IKF Competition Regulations (*), which state that the points earned by each team shall be decisive. In case these points are equal, the goal difference shall be taken into account. If teams are still equal after this, the goals scored by each team shall be the final decisive factor. (*In the case multiple teams end up with the same number of points, the scores against the pool leaders will be taken out.)

To decide the line-up of the five pools, an open draw will be conducted. This draw will be held during the IKF U19 World Korfball Championship in ‘t Kalverdijkje, The Netherlands on Saturday, April 20th at 14:00 o’clock. For the draw, the 20 participating countries have been divided into four pots.

Pool A Pool B Pool C Pool D Pool E
Netherlands Chinese Taipei Belgium China Germany
Pot 2 Pot 2 Pot 2 Pot 2 Pot 2
Pot 3 Pot 3 Pot 3 Pot 3 Pot 3
Pot 4 Pot 4 Pot 4 Pot 4 Pot 4

Pot 1: Netherlands, Chinese Taipei, Belgium, China, Germany.

Pot 2: England, Czech Republic, Portugal, Hungary, Australia.

Pot 3: Hong Kong China, Catalonia, Poland, South Africa, Suriname.

Pot 4: New Zealand, Slovakia, Ireland, Japan, Macau China.

The draw criteria as decided by the IKF EXCO are:

  • Pool leaders are not drawn but are fixed, based on the top five of the IKF World Ranking.
  • The IKF World Ranking as per 31-12-2018 is used to decide which countries end up in Pot 1-4, taking into account that all Continental champions are at least positioned in Pot three.
  • It is not allowed to have four European, three Asian or two Oceanian countries in the same pool. Therefore the draw of Pot 4 will be adjusted accordingly.
  • The drawing is completed per pot. So, first all countries presented in Pot 2 are drawn, then all countries in Pot 3 and, finally, all countries in Pot 4.

The draw can be followed live through the IKF YouTube channel.
