Perennial champion The Netherlands took just eight seconds to start their scoreboard momentum with two passes all it took to create a goal from Olav van Wijngaarden against Brazil. Intent on making an exhibition of the game, their fluid style showed no mercy to their South American opponent for a final score of 40-7.

Slovakia imposed their style on Brazil from the start, their female players in particular dominating the scoring to build a comfortable lead at the end of the first quarter. Coach Tomáš Sonnenshein going to his bench for a series of half time substitutions reduced the impetus, though by then the lead was too great for Brazil to make any impression. A late injury to Hugo Leornardo do Carmo Faguendes will not improve the prospects of an already depleted Brazil team. Zuzana Busikova top scored for the world 16th ranked Eastern Europeans with six, and Slovakia won 21-5.

Striving for a position in the top 10 from their current ranking of number 16, a match against the defending champion was a test of Slovakia’s progress and ambition. Supremely confident as ever, the Netherlands are also focused on playing a dynamic and entertaining brand of korfball at this tournament, which they proceeded to do, keeping the scoreboard ticking over through their stylistic approach. For Slovakia, Jakub Krajc scoring a running in shot against Dutch captain and superstar Daan Preuninger was a feat he will surely tell his grandchildren about in years to come. By the end every member of the Dutch squad had taken the court, and all scored, with Femke Faber top scorer on seven. Final score: Netherlands 39 – Slovakia 8.
