After a colourful and energetic opening ceremony, a large crowd provided enthusiastic support as the host team, Chinese Taipei, took their bow to outclass Ireland, building an unassailable lead in the first quarter before easing off slightly. While superstar Ya-wen Lin made some breathtaking goals for a game high total of five, her team mates also joined in the fun, demonstrating some telepathic connections and unerring accuracy to cruise to a 38-8 victory.

New Zealand and Ireland had a fierce battle in their Pool C contest. New Zealand gradually built a lead late in the second quarter and through the third, their tight defence, rebound power and sharing the goals throughout the team proving too much for their opponent. Aside from Elizabeth Tighe who top scored with five, Ireland was unable to bring the outside accuracy of their female players fully into play, trying in vain to rotate, though finishing on the wrong end of a low scoring match, New Zealand prevailing by 18-11.

After outstanding form in their opening match, when the hosts put on a virtuoso performance to account for Ireland, Chinese Taipei found New Zealand a more challenging opponent. Strong rebounding and focused defence kept the youthful New Zealand team within touching distance of the world number three through most of the first two quarters. Superstar Ya Wen Lin hit an eight metre buzzer beater to end the half, scoring a game high six in total. During the second half Chinese Taipei was able to break free of their determined opponents to finish comfortably ahead, though coach Bevan Lawson and his players can be proud of the fight they showed, and will use this game as motivation for the rest of the tournament, particularly in the next two days as they fight for the highest possible placing against more highly ranked opponents. Final score: a 30-13 victory to Chinese Taipei.
