Excitement on the bleachers from enthusiastic local schoolchildren that have ‘adopted’ the competing teams in an excellent promotion by the local organising committee was a feature of the day, no more evident than when Portugal played South Africa in front of a noisy and excited crowd. Keeping it simple and precise, enabling their superior athleticism to assert control, Portugal eased into the tournament with a 34-3 conquest of the gallant, though outmatched representative of the African continent.

Poland’s first match delivered South Africa’s second defeat, an assured all round performance from the IKF 12th ranked team, bringing the experience of players of the calibre of Tamara Siemieniuk and Krzysztof Rubinkowski to the court. Polish coach Maciej Żak had the luxury of several substitutions around half time, which only slightly impeded the momentum of his team towards a 23-4 victory.
