Malaysia, in their first ever WKC match, brought youth and feisty determination, while the Pan American champion Suriname came with height, physicality and korfball nous. Vladimir Slot and Randell van der Steen scored six each for Suriname to ease to a 27-5 victory.

As they did yesterday, Malaysia’s youth and fire unsettled a more experienced and higher ranked opponent early. Hungary, however, withstood the early pressure to gain control and take the sting out of their South East Asian opponents. Two goals at the end of the second quarter, including a spectacular long range buzzer beater from QiXun Chia, hinted at a resurgence from Malaysia, though it was not to be, and the match finished at 25-5 in favour of Hungary. Malaysia though will be back, and with most of this squad picking up from the silver medal they won at the recent U21 Asia, Oceania Korfball Championship, the future, for Malaysia is bright.

When they met in a friendly a few months ago, Suriname prevailed over Hungary. Despite the noisy presence of Holland szurkolók, Hungary’s ‘ultra’ fans from the Netherlands, who made their way east to support their favourite international team, Suriname gained an early ascendency that they never relinquished. Aiming to cut out the feed and therefore close down the attacking threat of Hungary’s female players, Suriname’s defence strategy worked. When they were in the attack meanwhile, supported by domination in the rebound, 19 year old Suriname newcomer Iske van Ginkel proved her worth, finishing as top scorer in this match with six to assist her team to a 22-8 win and firmly on track for the higher echelons of the tournament rankings.
