3rd IKF Asia U19 & U16 Korfball Championships 2018: Day 4 Results & Images

As Day 4 action of the 1-Korf progresses we are getting close to having a clear picture of ranking spots. Only six more matches to go in order to know the finalists. Mainly there were no surprises on Day 4 of the U19 & U16 championships, except Hong Kong defeated China in U16 (11:6). Malaysia took the revenge of their yesterday’s loss in 2-Korf format from Thailand. This may be attributed to obviously different game tactics used in both the formats. Taipei remains undefeated on Day 4 and close to reserve their spot in the finals. Tomorrow in the second half we will have finals and other ranking matches for the 2-Korf format.

Games can be followed live on Facebook page on 14 and 15 April 2018 https://www.facebook.com/OurSport.tv. Live results, matches schedule, game statistics, play-by-play, scorers and ranking pools will be available live from GYMNASIUM, THE AFFLILIATED JHONGLI SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL (JLSHS) OF NATIONAL CENTRAL UNIVERSITY.

Korfball aims for the 2023 Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia

The proposal to organize courses for referees and coaches was mooted by the President of Thailand Korfball Association. For referees and coaches, the IKF level 1 course began on 3 February till 5 February. The aim was enhancing their level and korfball skills.
The event took place at Sports Center of Srinakharinwirot University (SWU).
This event is organized under the close cooperation among IKF Asia, Thailand Korfball Association (TKA), SWU and National Taipei University of Education (NTUE) (Taiwan).
Prof. Inglish YC Huang, IKF Asia President conducted the coach course while Ms. Bird FY Hsieh, IKF Instructor conducted the referee course.

The grand event could be successfully organized with the grant support from Taiwan Sports Administration (Sports Ministry) based on the New Southbound Policy. Prof. Inglish Huang and Ms. Bird Hsieh were able to take 18 elite korfball players of NTUE as teaching assistants to efficiently and effectively enhance participants learning quality.

Apart from the education courses, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Prof. Supranee Kwanboonchan the TKA President and Prof. Inglish Huang, President of IKF Asia, which was witnessed by the participants, sponsors, and media in the morning on 3 February. The objective of this MOU is to state the partnership between TKA and the IKF Asia toward korfball as a sport for all and as an elite sport in Thailand.

Furthermore, the mixed training with the players of NTUE and the players of Thailand U19, U16, and open national squads were done in the evening 4 February.

With the great initiative invitation of Prof. Tuk (well-known nickname of S. Kwanboonchans), these parallel coach and referee courses consisted of 44 and 30 participants respectively from Cambodia, Hong Kong China, Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Singapore, Chinese Taipei and Thailand. This is a record-breaking number of participating countries in an IKF level 1 coach and referee course.

Prof. Tuk, an optimal role model for a leader, who is also the current President of ASEAN Council of Physical Education and Sport. IKF Asia will maintain its close cooperation with Prof. Tuk for spreading korfball not only in Thailand but further in the ASEAN countries by means of her tremendous influential strength.

A feasibly crucial goal is to deliver korfball into the competition programs of 2023 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Cambodia.

Adri “Swan” Zwaanswijk dies after dedicating his entire life to the development of korfball

The International Korfball Federation is deeply grieved to announce the passing of its Honorary Member Adri “Swan” Zwaanswijk in Amsterdam (Netherlands) yesterday morning at the age of 88.

Swan, as Zwaanswijk has been known to most that have had the pleasure to work and be inspired by him, was a korfball innovator over more than half a century. When he retired as national coach of the Netherlands korfball team, he was offered a trip around the world. He used this trip to promote and develop korfball outside Europe. At that time, korfball outside Europe was only present in Dutch and former Dutch colonies. Among other countries, he was the key figure of korfball introduction and development in India and Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) who are current korfball power houses in Asia. Famous was also his development work in the jungle parts Papua New Guinea where he built upon the earlier work of Roy Kirkby and he supposedly was offered an entire island by one of the local tribal chiefs.

At elite level, Zwaanswijk played 11 times for the Netherlands national korfball team in a period that there was effectively no preparation for matches, and players met each other on the train to Antwerp for their annual international match series. Later, in 1962, he became the first national korfball coach in the Netherlands and introduced the concept of training and preparation. After his retirement as national coach in the Netherlands in 1978, he worked tirelessly for the development of our sport, in particular in (but not limited to) Asia. He also developed coaching courses at the international level for the first time and the famous coaching camps at Papendal in the Netherlands were also his idea. Many of the current and past leading coaches and administrators have been trained by him at one of these Papendal coaching courses.

Next to that, he was also a strong advocate for major changes in the game itself. He pushed the notion that children needed to play on a lower post and with a smaller ball. He was a main driving force behind the elimination of the middle zone (korfball was played in three rather than two zones outdoor until the late 1980s in most countries and until the early 1990s in the Netherlands). Further, he developed a first concept of a synthetic korf to replace the then-common rattan korf. His desire for global development is reflected in the Swan Fund, a charity supporting korfball development in underprivileged countries.

The global korfball community will remember Adri Zwaanswijk for the lasting impact that he has had on our sport in many aspects, along with his consistent optimism, involvement, and passion. We wish his next of kin all the best in dealing with this loss.

The funeral service will be held in private. The family has informed us that a remembrance ceremony will be held at a later date.

Thailand Korfball Association joins IKF

The Executive Committee of the International Korfball Federation, in its meeting of 20 January 2018, accepted Thailand Korfball Association (TKA) to become an Associate Member of the International Korfball Federation.

The IKF President stated that the IKF is very happy to welcome Thailand in our global korfball family and wished TKA all the best with the development of korfball in Thailand.

Korfball has been played in Thailand for almost two years now, following initial introduction by Mr Morito Nubutoki from Japan who founded the first club in Bangkok. Subsequent support by IKF Asia and the Chinese Taipei Korfball Association has helped the further development. President Kwanboonchan of the TKA is an experienced sports administrator and conducted the formal recognition and registration process of the TKA by the Sports Authority of Thailand, following which the membership application to the IKF was filed.

Thailand joined is currently the 69th member of the International Korfball Federation. The IKF specifically faces rapid growth in Asia. Thailand has also entered a team to compete in the IKF Asia-Oceania Korfball Championship that will be held in August in Tokyo/Saitama, Japan.

Also, he thanked the CTKA Exco and IKF Asia President Huang for their extensive support developing korfball in Asia. Today, President Fransoo and President Huang met with the Chinese Taipei Sports Minister and the director of the International Affairs department to discuss future opportunities for major IKF events in Taiwan and further collaboration in the development of korfball in Asia.

Death of Ate van Heusden

It is with great sadness that the International Korfball Federation has learnt of the passing of Mr Ate van Heusden, developer of korfball, with latest initiatives in Morocco.

Ate van Heusden had been involved with the international development of korfball over many years, mostly in an informal role. Initially, in the 1980s, he got involved as the husband of Tineke van Heusden, who supported the development of korfball outside of Europe (the “A-continents” as it was called at that time. Ate was very active in his club PSV Eindhoven and within the club he supported many international initiatives, for many years linked with a close relationship with Chinese Taipei. Later, Ate participated as a creative thinker in multiple IKF initiatives, including participation at the IKF Congress. Most recent, again as part of his activities at PSV, he was a co-founder of the “Korfball Foundation Netherlands – Morocco” and has been one of the driving forces behind the establishment of the Moroccon Korfball Federation.

IKF President Jan Fransoo: “We will remember Ate for his endless creativity and energy, and his positive attitude, always seeing opportunities on the bright side of life. We wish his wife Tineke and his children Bart and Nienke lots of strength with carrying this loss.”

Korfball developments on track in India: IKF President in Delhi

Korfball developments are gaining pace again in Inda after a number of years of administrative turmoil in the most populous South-Asian country. IKF President Jan Fransoo, accompanied by IKF Asia President Huang, was in Delhi on Friday to discuss developments with the leadership of the Indian Korfball Committee IKC. The IKC was instated by the IKF following the suspension of the Korfball Federation of India KFI at the General Meeting of the International Korfball Federation last year.

Fransoo and Huang met with Mr Dilip Kumar, IKC Chairman, and Dr Pramod Sharma, IKC Co-chairman. Work in the area of development has been gaining pace again, with various National Championships having been held again, and an Indian Korfball League started. Furthermore, korfball has been reinstated as part of the University Sports Championships and the School Sports Championships.

To that effect, the Presidents and the IKC leadership met with the Secretary General and Director of Sports of the Association of Indian Universities AIU, as well as with the leading Lakshmibal National University of Physical Education. The AIU expressed extensive support for the further development of korfball and the IKC, IKF and AIU will work closely together on this.

Finally, the governance issue was discussed extensively with the relevant stakeholders in Delhi. Next steps were agreed upon towards re-establishing a formal and recognized national governing body for korfball.
