The IKF KCL R3 is over: PKC and Borgerhout qualify for the Korfball Champions League Final

The Belgian city of Herentals hosted on 6 and 7 January 2023 the decisive 3rd Round of this brand new European IKF Korfball Champions League, the last qualification event for the IKF Korfball Champions League Final. [Press kit booklet here]

After 3 previous qualifying events (the R1A & R1B played on September 2022 in Portugal and Poland, and the R2 on November in the Czech Republic) now it was time for the current Belgian and Dutch national finalists to join this competition.

TuS Schildgen from Germany and Trojans KC from England qualified for the IKF Korfball Champions League R3 after becoming the finalists of the R2, and they were ready to face the Dutch PKC/Vertom and the Belgian K. Borgerhout/Groen-Wit K.C. Sadly, a late withdrawal of the English team on December 30th due to unfortunate family circumstances forced an urgent adjustment to the tournament schedule.

The event continued therefore with the three remaining competitors based on the planned semi-final and final format with the original ranking of the teams for the KCL Round 3 as:

1- PKC/Vertom, NED
2- K. Borgerhout/Groen-Wit K.C., BEL
3- TuS Schildgen 1932 e.V., GER
4- Trojans KC, ENG

The withdrawal of Trojans KC means that PKC/Vertom earned a bye for the planned semi-final against Trojans KC and thereby automatically advances to the final of Round 3 on Saturday. The semi-final on Friday between K. Borgerhout/Groen-Wit K.C. and TuS Schildgen 1932 e.V. continud as planned and after an intense match, the Belgian club became the winner of this match by 20-7, and faced PKC/Vertom on Saturday, with a final score 14-25 in favour od the Dutch.

These results means that the last two remaining places at stake for the grand final of IKF’s inaugural KCL season will be ocupied by the Dutch PKC/Vertom and the Belgian K. Borgerhout/Groen-Wit K.C.

FINAL RESULTS

The winner of KCL Round 3 will play against the current champion of the Belgian Topkorfbal national league, Floriant Merelbeke, number two ranked team of the IKF KCL Final. On the other hand, number two of Round 3 will face the champions of the last season’s Korfbal League, Fortuna/Delta Logistiek, reigning Dutch champion and the highest ranked team in the KCL Final.

The IKF Korfball Champions League Final is programmed for the weekend of 10-11 February 2023 in the city of Delft in the Netherlands. The number three of KCL Round 3 will continue their European journey in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, for the IKF Korfball Champions League Challenger Final. This event is scheduled for 4 and 5 February 2023.

The Royal Belgian Korfball Federation in collaboration with the IKF and local clubs are the organisers of this exciting IKF KCL R3.

IKF CEO departure announcement

IKF CEO Tilbert La Haye announced his departure from the IKF, effective mid January. La Haye: “After almost 7 years working for the IKF, it is time to discover new grounds and take on a different professional challenge. It has been a huge pleasure to work in an unique sports environment, enjoying the many warm an passionate contacts all around the world. I would like to make use of this opportunity to thank everyone for the support and pleasant cooperation over the years and would like to wish the IKF and all its partners the best for the future.”

The IKF EXCO would like to make use of the opportunity to thank Mr La Haye for his efforts over the years. IKF President, Jan Fransoo: “Having joined the IKF as our first CEO in 2016, La Haye has shaped the CEO role in our organization. Our office has become more central in much of our operations, allowing us to better leverage the efforts of our many volunteers. Of the many initiatives that he has initiated, I would like to highlight two in particular.  First, we have made major steps in further formalizing and digitizing the processes around our events, which has allowed us to considerably grow our event calendar. Second, together with the IKF Beach Korfball Committee, La Haye has played a critical role in what has become our second discipline; beach korfball has grown up from a summer pastime to a full-fledged korfball discipline. It has been a privilege working with Tilbert over the past 7 years, both from a professional and a personal perspective. We wish him every success in his future endeavours”.

Job Opening: IKF CEO

The International Korfball Federation (IKF) is looking to recruit a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for its organization and encourages all those that are interested and capable to apply.

IKF has been the governing body for korfball in the world since 1933. Korfball is the only fully gender-balanced team sport in the world, started over 120 years ago in the Netherlands and is played on all five continents in the world. Korfball is played in over 70 countries worldwide. Many exciting new strategic initiatives are in process of development including the creation of new event and match formats, digital fan engagement strategies and brand positioning, and the deployment of an online learning academy.

IKF is an International Federation recognised by the International Olympic Committee and by SportAccord, and is a member of ARISF and IWGA. Our anti-doping rules are in compliance with the World Anti Doping Code, and further complies with appropriate standards for ethics, integrity, athlete representation, and athlete safeguarding.

IKF is a largely volunteer driven organisation, supported by a small administrative staff. The office, currently in Utrecht, the Netherlands, is the centre of many daily activities to support Competitions, Refereeing, Development and Education, Marketing and Digital, Anti-Doping, Planning and Control, Administration and Media.

The IKF General Meeting is the highest authority in the IKF, and elects the IKF Council and IKF Executive Committee. The IKF is managed on a daily base by the IKF CEO, who reports to the IKF Executive Committee. Many volunteers work in committees and events to realize elite competitions, courses and development activities, and promote healthy, fair, and inclusive sport.

The current IKF Office consists of the CEO position, an Administrative and Project Officer and a Financial Administrator.

Position:

Following the upcoming departure of the current CEO, the IKF has opened a search for a candidate to fill this position to continue professionalizing our key activities. We are seeking a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) who will enhance the strategic profile of our international federation and our activities.

The CEO will report to the Executive Committee with a direct reporting line to the President and/or Senior Vice-President. S/he will be responsible for providing strategic direction as well as directing the policy, operations and development of the Federation for the achievement of both long- and short-term global objectives of the sport of korfball.

In addition, s/he will be expected to provide general and specific direction for the day-to-day management of the Federation through, but not limited to event management, administrative management, financial management, marketing, and development. S/he will directly manage one Administrative and Project Officer and provide hands-on operational support to multiple committees and volunteers.

The CEO takes final responsibility for all administrative processes, such as the processes around official IKF events, development grants, general meetings, congresses, and meetings of the Council and Executive Committee, and official rules and regulations. It is obvious that this requires an excellent oral and written command of the English language.

IKF has its legal seat in the Netherlands and the position is based in our current Headquarter Office in Utrecht, Netherlands. We are open for candidates who are based outside the Netherlands. In case of a non-Dutch resident being appointed as CEO who is unable or not willing to relocate, we would expect her/him to be able to commute to the Netherlands at least once a month, while working remotely for the remainder of the time. Residency would be expected within the European Union.

The CEO is responsible for:

  • Converting the strategic plan of the IKF into a multi-year operational plan of activities that cover all aspects, such as events, education, development, marketing and funding. Assist the Treasurer in developing a budget that meets the requirements of the operational plans.
  • Lead the implementation of the operational plan in close collaboration with a large set of volunteer administrators that are spread across the world
  • Monitor progress and further enhance quality of IKF’s key activities: events and development. Every year, the IKF is responsible for the organization of 10-15 Elite level competition events across all age categories, and dozens of development activities.
  • Ensure high-quality communication across the IKF organization, and reach out to the entire global korfball community, with formal, informal, and social communication and media operations. Ensure the IKF Council, the IKF Committees, and the National Korfball Federations remain fully informed.
  • Support the IKF Executive Committee and the continental confederations in the execution of their activities.
  • Take new initiatives for events, development, funding, media, and acquisition.
  • Leading and management of the IKF staff.
  • Closely collaborate and coordinate with the IKF Secretary General regarding the implementation of decisions of the IKF Council and Executive Committee.

Candidate:

The successful candidate should exhibit strong management, leadership, strategic thinking and communication skills with a sound record of project management and achieving results, ideally in the sports management industry.

The candidate should possess a college or graduate degree in (sports) management / Sports Science, or a different degree with demonstrable experience in sports development and sports management. We expect the following experience:

  • At least five years’ experience in senior management roles, with direct line responsibility, ideally within the sports industry
  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating events, and liaison with national and/or international sport organisations, sponsors and Government bodies
  • A commercial mindset to create winning value propositions for sponsors in relation to their involvement in the international korfball community

You must be fluent (oral and written) in English, and at least one other global language, ideally Spanish and/or Chinese. Sports must be a proven substantial part of your education and working experience. Korfball must be more than just familiar to you, for instance by having been an elite athlete, having had administrative positions at club or national level, organized international events, or having taught in development activities. You must be a self-starter, proactive, a strong communicator with various levels of people in different cultural environments. Working hours are not strict to obey and regular out of normal office hours participation is required. You are prepared to travel and are used to managing organizations and events on a tight budget. You are familiar with the common software packages, should be social media savvy, and take initiatives to make use of new (online) technologies to increase productivity. You have the ability to be a serious counterpart for the members of the Executive Committee. Our external partners will experience you as a natural representative of korfball.

Salary and benefits

The salary is in accordance with the Dutch collective labour agreement in the sport industry, and is foreseen to be placed for an annual gross salary in scale 13, amounting to a minimum of EUR 57,108 and a maximum of EUR 79,320 annually, including benefits. Eventual salary will depend on qualification and experience.

For possible candidates who are non-Dutch residents, we are open to structuring the agreement in such a manner which is tax compliant for both IKF and the chosen candidate. Salary level will be based on assessment of the above indication with a possible adjustment based on local salary benchmarking of similar position and cost of living index.

Application:

We want to receive your application, motivation and CV electronically. Your application in English should be directed before 24 January, 2023 to the IKF Chair of the Executive Committee, Mr Gabi Kool at gabi.kool@ikf.org, and sent in copy to the IKF Senior Vice President, Mrs Danielle Ruts, at danielle.ruts@ikf.org.

An assessment might be part of the selection process.

All eyes on Taipei – New Year’s Message from the IKF President

292 days. That is the number of days that remain in 2023 until we start the World Korfball Championship in Taipei. 292 days where lots of work remains to be done by the Local Organizing Committee.  292 days of preparation for the 24 national teams that have qualified. And just a few months for those 24 National Korfball Federations to get their budgets organized for the trip to Taipei.

While we have had youth world championships and even an edition of The World Games in Chinese Taipei, it is the first time that the Chinese Taipei Korfball Association (CTKA) has taken on the challenge of receiving the world’s best in Taipei. With 24 countries,  the organizational challenge is substantial. All matches will be held in a single Championship venue with 3 courts in one building. We are completing the arrangements with the LOC on ensuring everyone will stay in a single Championship hotel. With the extensive post-covid travel uncertainties still present in Asia, this is not a trivial challenge. However, with the overwhelming commitment of the CTKA, the city of Taipei, the Chinese Taipei Sport Administration,  and the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee, I believe we will be able to provide a fantastic athlete experience next October. The IKF and the CTKA have set up a joint Coordination Committee for the event, which I have the honor and pleasure to chair.

Overseeing the process towards this WKC will be my last duty as IKF President.  Since June last year,  Executive Vice-President Gabi Kool has been leading the IKF Executive Committee. I have ceased to attend those meetings and have not been involved with the day-to-day decision making in the IKF. Gabi also leads a strategy task force and a task force on further developing our small-format Olympic game. At the World Congress in October, the proposals will be discussed and the principle decisions for the Olympic format will be made. I am very happy that the KNKV (NED) have announced to propose Gabi Kool as a candidate for the election as President, with support of multiple other National Federations. I will continue to chair the IKF Council until October, and – as announced – I will not be eligible for re-election.

This will allow me more time to commit to the development of The World Games and the International World Games Association, provided that the IWGA Membership again entrust me with that privilege at IWGA elections in May.

For this year, apart from the WKC, we will stage our Continental U21 Championships, and the U19 WKC. The next generation remains crucial for our development and I am happy that post-covid we are finally returning to our original cycle of events. Further, we will evaluate the first edition of the Korfball Champions League: a single competition for the best European clubs, culminating in the Satellite Final in Terrassa (CAT), the Challenger Final next month in Bergisch Gladbach (GER), and the Grand Final in Delft (NED). Results of this evaluation will be implemented for next season’s 2nd edition of the KCL.

I wish all of you that are active in playing, coaching,  officiating, organizing, or supporting korfball development in any other way, a healthy, prosperous, and joyful 2023, and I look forward to seeing many of you in October in Taipei, or at other korfball events around the world.

Suriname (1st) and Brazil (2nd) qualify for the WKC 2023 | IKF PAKC 2022

The 24 participants of  the IKF World Korfball Championship 2023 are known at the end of this IKF Pan-American Korfball Championship 2022, the last qualifying event that took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 18 to 20 December 2022.

Brazil, Suriname and Argentina were the 3 South-American countries competing in this qualifying tournament for the last two spots in next year’s WKC, plus a 4th local team playing out of competition.

The decisive game took place on Day 3, in the semi-final between Argentina and Brazil. Both teams had the same points in the ranking, and Suriname was already waiting in the final after winning all its matches during the 1st round.

Argentina beat Brazil 11-10 on Day 2, so the winner of this semi-final match would get the last spot to attend next year’s World Championship. After an intense game, the Brazilians showed their experience in this kind of games and took control from the very beginning. They leaded and controlled the game at all times, becoming the winners of the game (9-14) and reaching the precious final.

The last match for 1st place between Brazil and Suriname was clearly dominated by the current PAKC 2018 champions, who revalidated its throne after an overwhelming win by 2-14.

The IKF wants to thank the Argentinian Korfball Federation for hosting this PAKC 2022, and to all participants, volunteers and officials for this great 3 days of competition.

Daily live scores and matches were available on www.worldkorfball.sport website, together with all the results, statistics, play-by-play, top scorers and rankings.

The Korfball Association of Thailand (KAT), in collaboration with the IKF, was the organiser of this important championship, the largest AOKC event ever held with 12 teams participating.

The teams of Australia, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, New Zealand, Singapore and Thailand battled it out in two groups of six (drawn based on world rankings) before cross over matches make for an exciting final weekend where all teams were still be contention to qualify for next year’s World Championship.

DAY 7 REVIEW – Finals (4/12/2022) – By Rob Smith

On the final day, with a series of ranking games, play started early.

First up Indonesia and Malaysia played off for ninth position. Although out of the qualification places, ninth at this tournament is first reserve for the 2023 Korfball World Championship, so some hope for the winner. Both teams worked hard, despite this being the end of a tough week. Malaysia prevailed by 16-7 and will be waiting for the call if one of the qualifiers is not able to make it to Taipei next year.

Thailand and Hong Kong China met to determine seventh place. A close game showed how much the host has improved through the tournament: their IKF ranking is 20 places lower than their opponent, though most of the way through the scoreboard suggested we were heading for golden goal. In the end, Hong Kong China did just enough to complete victory: 9-8.

Next up, India versus Japan was a rematch of a pool game from day two of the tournament, where India showed that, despite several years of absence from international korfball, opponents need to take them seriously. India led most of the way, though never by more than two, and at the end that was the difference: 12-10. Fifth place capped a successful return to this tournament for India, while now sitting sixth in the region, Japan falls back one place from the ranking they achieved in 2018.

Despite being neighbours and close korfball friends, New Zealand and Australia have not met in a full senior international match since 2010. With the bronze medal at stake today, nerves and fatigue from a tough week got the better of New Zealand early, and they failed to find the energy that had served them well to date. By the time they clicked into gear, Australia’s lead was too great, and the more experienced Australian team was able to withstand a comeback to take the bronze medal by 16-11.

In the final, perennial Asia-Oceania champion Chinese Taipei showed that, despite winning all their games with ease, they have played so far this week with power to spare, lifting their game with increased precision in attack and sustained excellence throughout the team for a spectacular crowd pleasing performance to overcome their neighbour and rival, China, by 29-17.

DAY 6 REVIEW – Semi-finals (3/12/2022) – By Rob Smith

With the top four teams in this tournament decided yesterday, today and tomorrow will determine which others fill the next four ranking positions and therefore assure qualification to the 2023 World Korfball Championship.

India faced Indonesia in the first game, intent on celebrating their comeback to international korfball after a long absence with a seat at the top table. While the first half was tight and tense, India moved up a gear in the second half to win the game comfortably, 25-8, therefore securing qualification and participation in the world championship for the first time since 2011, a whole generation ago in terms of korfball talent.

Hong Kong China and Japan both participated in the 2019 world championship, having finished fourth and fifth respectively in 2018’s  edition of this tournament, and are both intent on building on that in 2023. They met to decide which will definitely advance. Hong Kong China led for much of a game dominated by defence and characterised by nerves in attack. Although Hong Kong China seemed to have overcome their disappointment at missing a top four place yesterday, the margin was always small and Japan stayed positive to take the lead late in the game, holding firm to win by 10-9. Japan celebrated their qualification and a chance to play for the fifth ranking this week, while Hong Kong China has one more chance tomorrow to make it into the top eight.

Thailand and Singapore met to determine which will keep their opportunity to qualify for the world championship alive into the last two days. Singapore has yet to win a game, while Thailand achieved that milestone yesterday. Encouraged by that success, the host established a comfortable first half lead, which they built on further for a final scoreline of 21-6, putting into practice what they have learnt in their earlier games. While Singapore became the first team that will definitely not proceed to next year’s world championship, they are young players and their first international experience has set them up for a positive future in korfball.

Malaysia and Philippines met in the day’s final game. Again the loser would be removed from contention for a place in the World Korfball Championship. Malaysia has shown plenty of promise at this tournament, and with a young and determined team, is establishing the foundation required if it is to become a serious future contender. Philippines is at an earlier point in its korfball development. Malaysia steadily built a lead to confirm it remains in contention for qualification, winning by 17-6, while Phillipines must be content to play off for 11th place.
