New appointment supports French-speaking international development

With the recent re-invigoration of French korfball, and korfball development gaining momentum in numerous African Francophone countries, the IKF’s Development and Education Committee (DEC) has added Dirk Sercu to its membership, with his appointment to the new role as development officer for French-speaking countries.

Bringing a long and distinguished korfball career as a player and coach in Belgium and the Netherlands to his new role, as well as coaching England’s national senior team from 2003 to 2007, Dirk was also recently appointed as coach of Belgian champion club Boeckenberg.

His first official duty as a member of the DEC is a visit to Ivory Coast from 1 to 10 July, where Dirk and DEC colleague Theo van der Linde will participate in a series of clinics and other activities administered by Federation Ivoirienne de Korfball.

This is the second recent appointment aimed at sustaining korfball development in new IKF member countries. In May the IKF DEC appointed Peter Busik of Slovakia as project manager for Eastern Europe. An international player and referee, Peter’s new role is to support and consolidate korfball development activities in various countries including Romania, Slovakia, Serbia, Greece and Armenia.

Beach korfball joins Olympic events in Lipno and The Hague

In Lipno nad Vltavou (Czech Republic), beach korfball is part of the Olympic Park of the City from 7-12 August.

In The Hague (Netherlands), beach korfball is part of the Olympic Experience from 17-20 August.

If you know of any more such events with korfball, please inform the IKF Office

IKF EKC R1 West & East 2016: Day 3 (Sunday) Review & results

Last day in IKF EKCR1 West and East tournaments, that allow us to know the four teams that qualifies and will participate in the next IKF EUROPEAN KORFBALL CHAMPIONSHIP 2016 in Dordrecht (The Netherlands) from 22 to 30 October 2016: GERMANY, TURKEY, CATALONIA and POLAND. Congratulations!

REVIEW:

The final day of IKF EKC 2016 R1W, but not the finals as this qualifying tournament was in competition structure all six teams meeting each other once in these three days.

This was the day on which the decisions are not only for qualification for IKF EKC 2016, but also for IKF EKC 2018. After the four games played was the final ranking still not fixed.

Because of this all matches were important, everyone was aware of this and gave something special to all matches.
The first match against Sweden was important for Wales, In case of loss the fifth place was maximally attainable and thus no qualification for IKF EKC 2018. At winning this match they were depending on results in the next game between Ireland and France for qualification 2018. The Welshmen did what they had to do beating Sweden, 14-7.

For them the stressful waiting started. There were two scenario’s:

1. – If Ireland wins than places both Ireland as France itself for IKF EKC 2018, by that France already had won in an earlier match of Wales
2. – If France wins France and Wales both qualifies for IKF EKC 2018

It was a match with passion, emotion, beautiful actions but also mistakes on both sides.
The French public backed their team the whole match. Till the 21th minute the score was close, the gap never bigger as 2 goals. But in six minutes then the score went from 6-6 to 10-6 in favour of France. As a Phoenix Ireland fought back the last six minutes of the second half, after a thrilling last minute there was an equal score, 10 -10, so Golden Goal. In the second minute of the Golden Goal period Clément Chareyre scored his third, but most impotant goal in this match, final score 11-10. Because of this France ranked third, Wales ranked fourth and Ireland ends at the fifth place at IKF EKC 2016 R1W.

The last match of the event was formally not a final, but the atmosphere and the quality of the match was as a final. Both Catalonia as Turkey were eager to win.

The first part of the match Catalonia took the lead, but the Turkish team fought back. At halftime the score was 6 -9 in favour of Turkey. Important were the two missed penalties by Catalonia. In the second half the first two scores were of Turkey, this gap of 5 goals was to big for the Catalonian team to close, what even they did.

Turkey won the match, 14-12 and because of that is the winner of IKF EKC 2016 R1W.
The role of the women in the Turkish team is important, they scored nine of the fourteen goals.

It was a great event, with good sportsmanship at all teams, good cooperation between referees and jury, but above all a very good local organisation with a lot of volunteers and public

IKF European Korfball Championships 2016 and 2018: an overview

With this weekend’s qualification and tomorrow’s draw for the IKF EKC 2016, the build-up to the new competition structure in Europe has started. In the eventual new structure, the European Korfball Championship will be held every two years, with A and B groups competing for the title and for promotion respectively.

Some history

The IKF European Korfball Championship has been held since 1998. The first edition was held in Estoril (POR). Until 2006, the Championship was held every four years, with 8 teams taking part in the final round. The European Champion is award the Ton Marteijn Trophy. Qualification was conducted in many different formats. The best two teams that did not qualify have contested each four years the so-called European Bowl, the winner of which was awarded the Jan Hanekroot Trophy.

16 Teams

With the growth of the number of competing countries, IKF Europe decided that from 2010 onwards, the European Championship would be held with 16 teams. The Netherlands (2010) and Portugal (2014) hosted this Championship running over a period of 10 days. Differences in strength were however large and the length of 10 days was deemed too long by many participants. Further, at the 2013 Lisbon Congress, the European Countries agreed with a new bi-annual schedule.

Promotion and Relegation

With the Championship to be held every two years, a system with an A-Championship and a separate B-Championship became possible. The idea is that a certain number of teams will relegate from the A-Championship to the B-Championship after each edition, and a certain number of teams from the B-Championship will be promoted. Whether this will be a direct promotion of relegation, or whether play-offs will need to be played, is yet to be determined.

2018: First new format IKF EKC

The first IKF European Korfball Championship in the new format will be hosted by the Netherlands in 2018. They will host both the A-Championship and the B-Championship. To transition from the old format championship to the new format, in 2016 the Netherlands will also host a European Korfball Championship; this edition from 22-30 October in Dordrecht will see 10 teams compete.

IKF EKC 2016

The countries taking part in the IKF EKC 2016 are: Netherlands (current Champion and host), Belgium, Portugal, England, Czech Republic, and Russia (qualified at the 2014 IKF EKC), Germany, Poland (qualified through a tournament in Slovakia), Turkey and Catalonia (qualified through a tournament in France).

The countries finishing at the top-8 of the upcoming IKF European Korfball Championship will play for the A- Championship in 2018; the remaining two countries will play for the B-Championship.

IKF EKC 2018

The Netherlands will host both the A-Championship and the B-Championship in 2018. For the B-Championship, the following countries have already qualified: France, Wales (qualified through a tournament in France), Slovakia and Scotland (qualified through a tournament in Slovakia). The remaining two places for the B-Championship will be contested at a qualification event to which all non-qualified European countries can enter. This event will be held in 2017 at a date and location to be determined later.

IKF EKC R1 West & East 2016: Day 2 (Saturday) Review & results

Intense second day of IKF EKC R1 West 2016 qualification tournament in Saint Etienne. A lot happened; sometimes could have been written for a Alfred Hitchcock’s movie.

A thrilling first match between Turkey and Ireland. At a score of 6-2 in favour of Turkey one of the shot clocks gave problems. Because of this there was a “technical time out” of about 15 minutes. Kees Verhoeven used this for focussing his Irish team. On the other hand the Turkish team struggled to get back to the level they had before. Ireland came in the lead with two goals, but in the last minute with just 30 seconds on the clock the Turkish team equalised the score. Ireland won the toss for the Golden Goal, but the first ball was lost unfortunately, the Turkish team scored directly after that, so Turkey won, 10-9 GG.
Compliments for the local organisation for organising a working spare set of shot clock very soon.

France beat Sweden by 17-4. Again Catalonia showed their supremacy in a match against the Wales squad; unless their working till the last minute, 15-5.

The second part of the day was decisive for the top and the others. In their fourth match against Ireland, Sweden enjoyed the moment they were in the lead in this game (1-0), but after that it was Ireland making the difference. Ireland won, 8-17.

Turkey qualified for the final round of IKF European Korfball Championship 2016 (October, The Netherlands) in a match with two hard working teams, both searching for an effective attack. Unfortunately this searching was for both teams not very successful, therefore a low score at the end, 4-11. But enough for Turkey to qualify.

Catalonia, the team with best play shown till now: attractive, stable and fast ball play had to defeat France, this evening again supported by a large and enthusiastic audience. The French players showed their perseverance, but that was not enough to beat Catalonia. With their victory of 4-18 Catalonia gained qualification for the final round of IKF EKC 2016

Because of this in the first two matches of tomorrow will be decided the ranking for the places three till six. In the last match Catalonia and Turkey will battle for the first position in the ranking of this qualification competition.

Ranking after four matches (of five)
Catalonia 4-12
Turkey 4-11
France 4-6
Ireland 4-4
Wales 4-3
Sweden 4-0

On the other hand, these are the results in IKF EKC R1 in Nitra, where the other teams also competed to qualify for the final round of IKF EKC 2016 in October.

IKF EKC R1 West & East 2016: Day 1 review & results

The first match day in Saint Etienne, France, for IKF European Korfball Championship 2016 Round 1 West (IKF EKC 2016 R1W) started with a straight victory of Catalonia over Ireland, 18 – 4. The whole match the young Catalonian team with just a few “old” faces showed they are eager to win this first.

Before the start of the first match the organisation was faced with the consequences of strikes. Two referees were not able to come to Saint Etienne at the last moment. The strikes caused problems for some teams, but fortunately all teams are present in Saint Etienne.

The second match between the real home team, France, and Wales was an intense match. At the end the France squad captured the victory , 14 – 10.
Sweden is back at the korfball front, but in their match against Turkey the difference in quality and experience was quite big and made for a loss with 6-17

The most interesting match was the one between the two so-called Gaelic countries Wales and Ireland. It was an intense match inside and outside the field. Long time it looked this would be the first Golden Goal match in this event, but in the last minute Ruth Campbell made a clever “turn around” goal. In the last attack Wales was not able to make it equal (11-12)

After the Opening Ceremony (with a lot of young children entering the field together with the players of all participating countries) the over 400 people on the tribune saw France battle for the best against Turkey. Almost the whole the score was very close, but before halftime the Turkish team made a decisive difference. At the end there was a final score of 10-15 on the scoreboard.
In the last match Catalonia showed their supremacy with a score of 25 – 6 0ver Sweden.
