Coach education for Costa Rica pioneers

In late September IKF instructor Jorge Alves was in Costa Rica where he worked with the budding korfball community to progress the skills of a group of local coaches who will lead development in the IKF’s newest member country.

Nineteen people participated at the IKF Level II “Formation Coach” course, for a total of 35 hours, with 12 of the coaches taking part in the IKF’s on-line coach development programme.

Teaching 19 new coaches is another step forward for the Costa Rica Korfball Association (“Asociación de Korfball y Deportes Asociados”). Subsequently, on 1 November, the IKF Council approved Costa Rica’s membership application, subject to final ratification by the IKF General Meeting scheduled for November 2015 in Belgium, which should officially make Costa Rica the 63rd IKF member.

Costa Rica’s newly qualified coaches have already started to introduce korfball into primary and secondary schools, with the aim of setting up a competition in the cities of Cartago and San José.

First Chinese Taipei U18 & U16 National Korfball4 Championships

The inaugural Chinese Taipei U18 & U16 National Korfball4 Championships is taking place on National Jhongli Senior High School (Jhongli SHS) on 22 – 23 November 2014.

This event shall be the innovative national championship adopting the IKF official rules of Korfball4 recently approved by IKF Council. One single match is played 5 minutes times 4 quarters and one team is composed of 2 female and 2 male players. 2 referees with whistles are arranged. There is no limit on the number of substitutions and the player changed out is allowed to return for playing. The schedule of 1st first playing day was simply for age group U18 (senior  high school) with 6 teams’ participation. The round robin system was used for the top 3 teams and each team had 1 won – 1 loss result so the penalty contest was taken to decide the ranking. Finally Jhongli SHS wins the historical crown. The 1st runner-up is Nankan SHS and the 2nd runner-up is Hujiang SHS. All the U16 matches will be subsequently played on the 2nd playing day.

The playing of Korfball4 is dynamic, spectacular and easily learned. Chinese Taipei Korfball Association is convinced that Korfball4 is a very good alternative game played in much more accessible court to effectively create new korfball population.
