International Youth Korfball Day in England

The Kent and Medway Schools Korfball Tournament and the Inter-Clubs under thirteen & under sixteen Korfball Tournament 2013

The Kent Korfball Association (KKA) hosted two Korfball Tournaments on Saturday, 15 June 2013 to celebrate the International Korfball Federation (IKF) Day of Youth. The schools’ tournament consisted of six schools entering fourteen teams between them, eight in the under 9 age group and six in the under 11’s.

The Inter-club under 13 & under 16 tournament comprised four clubs – KwiekVicta (KV), Bearsted, two teams from Tornadoes with a fifth being a combined Kingfisher and Tornadoes team.

The KKA were honoured to have the Deputy Mayor of Medway, Councillor Mrs Jane Etheridge, and her consort Mr David Etheridge, attending during the afternoon session to watch games and present the medals.

The matches were played at Rainham School for Girls. The under 9s played in two pools with the two pools in the afternoon session being changed to enable teams of similar ability to play against each other. The under 11 teams played a ‘round-robin’ competition.  The under 13 & 16 matches were also played as a ‘round-robin’ competition.

The players had to battle against some wet and blustery weather conditions which made passing and shooting a challenge. All the teams were highly motivated which resulted in some very competitive and hard-fought games. This, in turn, made the final results very close with the final positions being decided in some cases by goal difference.

It is very encouraging that several of the schools taking part now include Korfball within their respective national curriculum PE syllabuses as an invasion sport.  Also, several of the Under 13/16 players will be taking Korfball at GCSE, A2 and A level.

The final results were:

Under 9s: Offham Hotshots, Bligh Bears, Horsted Hurricanes, Bligh Cubs, Parkwood Panthers, Barming, Halling Hurricanes and Offham Shooters.

Under 11: Offham Hotshots, Parkwood Panthers, Barming, Horsted Hornets, Halling Hawks and Offham Shooters.

Inter-Club Under 13/U16s: Tornadoes, KwiekVicta (KV), Bearsted, Tornadoes Diablos, Kingfisher/Tornadoes Storms.

The KKA was delighted that the Deputy Mayor was able to attend the tournament and was very appreciative of her support and encouragement to the schools, teachers, coaches, players and parents.

I would like to thank all the members of the various clubs for helping with the arrangements on the day and making the tournament such a success.

Belgium on a mission in Cali

Being selected for the Belgian national korfball team (known as the Diamonds) is not a matter of preparing for single events every x years. All top players and upcoming talents are closely followed on a day-to-day basis by our technical and medical staff and this with a long term strategy in mind. They become part of a team that will compete at every occasion, aiming at the best possible result and that’s being the number one team. splt0612

The group of athletes preparing for the World Games 2013 in Cali increased its training effort as of March this year after the Belgian Topleague final. Four to five training sessions a week became their ‘new normal’ : physical training by Athletes Care Antwerp, specific korfball training, test matches and individual conditional trainings on top of that.

Thanks to the support of the Belgian Olympic and Interfederal Committee (BOIC), the Diamonds have the necessary resources to prepare for and to participate at the World Games in Cali. Thanks to the effort of several people we have the opportunity to compete against some other World Games participants (Chinese Taipei and Germany) in a pre World Games Tournament which will take place in Antwerp (Belgium) in the week prior to the departure for Cali. Fourth participant to this event will be the U21 selection of The Netherlands.

The Belgian delegation will consist of mature players and talented youth, finalists at the IKF U23 World Championships in Barcelona last year.  Captains of the Diamonds are Davor Duronjic and Annelies Vandenberghe who both have a lot of international experience and have been part of the team for many years now. They will make sure that all the Diamonds will go for the extra mile : one team, one mission!

USA Year of Youth Match

IMG_20130615_101004_589On Saturday, June 15, 2013, the USA held a youth in korfball event in California. We had middle school, high school and a couple college students come out to the even. We began with an introduction to korfball followed by some training. We ended the event with a White vs Blue korfball match. The match was very exciting to watch. At the half, the blue team was up 4-2. This deficit did not deter the white team a bit as they battled back and took over the second half. At the end of regulation, the score was tied at 9-9. Both teams went back and forth in golden goal, however, J. Vaiz was able to score the final goal leading the Blue team to it’s first California Youth in Korfball victory.IMG_20130615_101105_863

Youth Beach Korfball Tournament in the Netherlands

Youth Beach Korfball Tournament at The Beach 15 June

The Dutch will celebrate the International Youth Korfball Day with a beach korfball tournament. What is more fun than combining your favourite sport with your favourite location? Beach and korfball make a fine match, that certainly goes to show from the increasing number of participants in the games and clinics that have lately taken place. Not to mention the growing crowds that come to watch them. And of course, enthusiastic messages on social media also indicate that more and more korfball players choose to play on sand in summer.

Therefore, on 15 June a Youth Beach Korfball Tournament will take place in The Beach in Aalsmeer, as part of the ‘2013 Year of the Korfball Youth’. Contestants are all between the age of 9 and 18. Their supporters, however, are of all ages. The more people come to support the teams, the merrier the ‘beach’ will be.

The Beach in Aalsmeer consists mainly of indoor beach courts, but also has some outdoor courts, which is where the games will be played in good weather. Music, sand, lots of fun people, enthusiastic athletes and hopefully sun, will provide you the ultimate beach vibe and guarantee you an amazing Beach Korfball day!

IKF’s 80th anniversary: Focus on Youth

13 June 2013 marks the 80th birthday of the International Korfball Federation. On this very date in 1993, leaders of the Netherlands and Belgium Korfball Associations met to establish an International Federation with its main objective to spread the game of korfball across Europe. We have often contemplated what would have happened if the pace of international development of korfball in the 1930 would have been the same as what we have seen around the turn of the millennium. But this is just food for historians.

The IKF Council has designated 2013 as the Year of the Korfball Youth, to celebrate our 80th anniversary. An excellent project team is lead by our Honorary Member Henk Welmers, with young project team members from all continents participating. The pinnacle of the activities in the Year of the Korfball Youth will be a worldwide Youth Korfball Day – upcoming this Saturday June 15. More than 75% of our member associations have committed to take part in what promises to be a memorable day.

For many of the participating national korfball associations, this presents their first endeavours in the youth korfball domain. I am hopefull that this will only be the first step of strengthening the youth programs across the world. I wish all participants a phenomenal  worldwide Youth Korfball Day, and appreciate hearing from many of you on the activities conducted.

Jan Fransoo, President
