Fun activities for youth in Catalonia

In Catalonia we have been focusing on fun activities aimed at younger children, but without forgetting the important element of competition. There are three parts to our plan:

  1. Area competition: four competitions of u18, u16, u14 and u12. The u18 competition will be run with a shot clock, a new development for this age group. The u16 competition will be played as 8 vs 8 on a full field, and we will use it as a test for the competition next season. The u14 and u12 competition will be played with the beach korfbal format 3 vs 3 or 4 vs 4, run as a test for the next season.
  2. KangarooKorfs Area: about ten kangaroo korfs were set up at different heights, with extra games for youngsters.
  3. Area clinics: different coaches taught clinics on shooting, passing etc. during the day.

We also hope to join the global goals initiative and will work hard to spread youth korfball. We look forward to a fantastic day of youth korfball around the world!

Dr. Shouu-Chuyan YANG passed away aged 83 peacefully in the morning May 10th , the same date Prof. Eugene CHEN, Father of korfball Chinese Taipei, left to heaven in 2004. “Uncle Yang” (his nickname in the society of Chinese Taipei korfball athletes) acted as the President of the Chinese Taipei Korfball Association in 1993-1997 and furthermore, with the help of his fluent Japanese and English, the IKF innovated the development and promotion of korfball in Japan in 1998 and successfully organized the Korfball Tournament, the 6th World Games 2001 in Akita.

Recent years, Dr. Yang’s had been suffering heart illness and spinocerebellar atrophy. His last showing up in the international korfball stage was 2008 IKF U23 World Korfball Championship in Kaohisung, Chinese Taipei (see the attached photo). The funeral service will take place in his hometown, Hualien, at 09:00 am local time Wednesday 22 May.

Dr. Yang was born in 1931 to become the 2nd child of 10-child family of Yang. He and his wife, Michelle MA, also construct their own big family with 2 sons, 2 daughters and 12 grandchildren. We wish Yang’s wife, children, grandchildren and relatives of the family strength in the period ahead of them. The korfball world will remember Dr. Yang with the greatest respect.

Year of the Youth promotion in Bulgaria

Bulgarian korfball leaders have been working to promote korfball in their country for over three years. They have promoted a special project called ‘Guarantee for the Future’. Thanks to extensive work in all areas of the country, they have two new clubs in Haskovo and Panagurishte. They are now waiting for their legal registration.

The next step on ‘2013 – Year of the Korfball Youth’ is the recruitment and training of children, young people and teachers in the four largest cities in Bulgaria: Burgas, Varna, Blagoevgrad and Haskovo. Bulgaria is working with municipalities and other regional centres to promote the sport in schools. As mentioned above, they have been working for youth korfball development for three years and will continue into 2014.

Year of Youth presents an opportunity in Hong Kong

Youth korfball player numbers have increased steadily in Hong Kong in recent years. During the “Year of the Korfball Youth” the Hong Kong China Korfball Association (HKCKA) aims to increase the promotion of korfball to schools, targeting young people aged 10-23, including primary, secondary and tertiary school students.

HKCKA has a dual aim: to raise the popularity of korfball among young people; and to increase the numbers participating, at both the competitive and the leisure level.

A series of demonstrations will be offered, covering a basic introduction to the game of korfball, demonstrating basic korfball skills such as shooting, one-on-one attack and defence. These demonstrations will provide schools and students a gateway to become familiar with and interested in the sport of korfball.

In the “Year of the Korfball Youth” HKCKA aims to complete at least 15 demonstrations

A worldwide korfball competition: Korfs vs Balls

Hungary developed a great plan: a worldwide korfball competition. It is not complicated, not expensive and the Hungarians are ready to support us with ideas and advice on how to run this activity.

The IKF EXCO and the Organising Committee expect many countries will embrace the Hungarian idea. Strong youth means a strong future, take your responsibility and join with the other countries to participate in the International Youth Korfball Day.

International Youth Day Celebration

We will play korfball at 15 locations on 15 June in Hungary. At each location we will form two teams: the Korfs and the Balls (there will be several age groups at each location). We will tally the results of all the Korfs teams and the Balls teams aggregated, so it will be a country-wide korfball match between the two teams. We will have an interactive map where the visitors can see the results at each location, and by age group, including all the names of the players who played at that location. Next to the map, the big score board will show the progressive overall standings. At the end of the day we will have the final result between Korfs and Balls. We will also post pictures, videos and reports from each location.

Our goal is to have 15 locations, 50 teams and 1,000 goals scored in Hungary! We can also extend this project world-wide and invite other nations to take part also so we can make a worldwide korfball match, where we can aim for 1,000 locations, 5,000 teams and 100,000 goals!

Year of the Youth promotion in Hungary

Hungarian Korfball Association (HKA):
3 more schools on the Student Olympics!

The Hungarian Korfball Association’s goal in the Year of the Youth is to start korfball in a new region (Pest) in Budapest, and attract 3 more schools to play korfball and involve them into its’ official youth competiton system called Student Olympics. The targeted age group of the project is the secondary school students.

The Hungarian Korfball Association started the project on 4 March, 2013, while the planned finish is October. As a result, these schools will join the Student Olympics.

The new schools will be introduced to korfball, and the most enthusiastic ones will receive test equipment to start korfball as an extra activity at the PE lessons. The PE teachers will receive a basic korfball education course, and will be supported by regular follow-up activities (visits to PE lessons, small school tournaments).

The long-term goal of HKA is to increase korfball’s popularity in Budapest, and increase the numer of korfball players by using these schools as a continuous youth base for the existing korfball clubs.

Trojans win English League title and Birmingham qualify for the English League

The England Korfball Association held their Championship weekend on 4th and 5th May at the Whitgift Sports Centre in Croydon. Trojans KC won the trophy for the sixth year in a row by beating Kingfisher KC (from Kent) in the final 28 – 13. The result means that in the 2014 edition of the IKF Europa Shield Kingfisher KC will compete for the first time ever. Nomads KC clinched 3rd place by beating Nottingham KC 16 – 13.
In the National League semi-finals Kingfisher KC, who finished 3rd in the regular season, surprisingly beat Nottingham KC 19 – 13 to reach their first ever final. The other semi-final also almost provided an upset as Nomads KC (4th in the regular season) led Trojans KC until shortly before the end when the holder’s greater experience prevailed and eventually won 18 – 16.
In the Promotion Play-offs, Birmingham City KC, a club formed just three years ago, won their way through at the expense of Cambridge City KC, who missed out for the third year in a row. Promotion is decided following a round robin event and with Birmingham and Cambridge finishing equal on points the promotion hinged on the head to head match between the two clubs, which Birmingham won 11 – 6.
The promotion of Tom Brady’s Birmingham means that the Premier Division of the EKL now has three teams from outside London and Kent, the areas which have dominated the League since its inception in 1985
