Seasoned Sport Executives and Elite athletes join IKF’s Olympic Format Taskforce

Following IKF’s Open Call to fill several positions in the newly created Olympic Format Taskforce, the chosen candidates have been announced.

Project Manager of the Taskforce will be Portuguese national Jorge Rodrigues e Sousa, graduate from AISTS’s Master of Advanced Studies in Sport Administration and Technology and a Senior Consultant and PMO in consulting for Smart Cities and Smart Stadiums. Through AISTS his experience includes projects with the IOC and World Athletics, while he is also a member of APOGESD, the Portuguese Association for Sport Management.

Jens van Poucke, Belgian national and a former Ice Hockey professional athlete, will be responsible in the Taskforce for the assessments and designs of possible new formats, playing surfaces and competition format, the player ranking system, and appeal among athletes. He is currently a private banker at a Swiss Investment Bank with further experience as founder & CEO of a tech startup in the USA, product director, Head of Sport/Marketing and Head of Anti-Doping for the Olympic Federation of WSB & AIBA.

Other members of the Taskforce include Elite athlete Ya-Wen Lin, current player of the national team of Chinese Taipei, Marjan de Jong, former Elite player of the Dutch national team, Willard “Bill” Johnson, current Elite athlete and player in the USA beach korfball national team and Dutch national Geert Hendriks, Vice President of the Swiss Korfball Federation, based in the Lausanne, the Olympic capital, and who is a leading expert in sport, sustainability and the Olympic movement.

Gabi Kool, Chair of the Executive Committee and chairing the Olympic Format taskforce shared: “IKF is extremely pleased to compose such a strong team of people working on this important task for our federation in the coming year. We have secured a diverse group, both from within the korfball community as well as some new faces to our sport who bring additional expertise, a proven track record and new perspectives to our taskforce. I have full confidence that this team will bring a well-rounded view and recommendation to the Executive Committee in 2023 so we can take the right decisions for an important element of the future of our sport.”

The Olympic Format taskforce is responsible to lead the project aimed at helping IKF to determine which of the new Korfball formats, with a smaller number of players compared to traditional Korfball8, has the largest chance of broad appeal among athletes, fans, National and Regional Federations and sponsors with the ultimate goal of appealing to the IOC for a possible inclusion on the Olympic program. The project has been initiated in Q1 2022 and is expected to be completed by Q3 2023 after which the promotion towards the IOC will be initiated as part of a more holistic Olympic inclusion strategy. Key milestones are the creation of a research framework, including the competitive landscape of other sports and mapping out possible appeal among all stakeholders; field research among all identified stakeholders including possible competition formats, playing formats and the creation of a scaling framework. This will be followed by a presentation of the interim findings to IKF and Regional Federations to collect further feedback and comments with a final delivery to IKF of the report and recommendation to support IKF’s Executive Committee in their decision making. Following that decision during the World Korfball Congress in 2023 at the World Championship in Chinese Taipei, IKF will then start the roll out, scaling activities and active promotion of its chosen format towards IOC as well as the World Games.

IKF Africa General Meeting (online) 2022-05-21

In the meeting, it was also announced that the All-African Championships will be held across two different locations, allowing for the highest possible participation in the two main korfball clusters. Abidjan (CIV) will host the All-African Championship for the North Region, with all countries in ANOCA Zones 1-4 invited to take part. The event’s tentative dates are 22-25 September 2022. Lusaka (Zambia) will host the All-African Championship for the South Region, with all countries in ANOCA Zones 5-7 invited to take part. This event tentative dates are 10-13 November 2022. The hosting decisions are subject to the hosting contracts between the IKF and the national korfball organisations of Ivory Coast and Zambia being confirmed and signed in due course.

Over the past quadrennial, the IKF and IKF Africa’s focus has been on further strengthening the existing national organisation on the continent. Development is hence an important part of the strategy of IKF Africa, supported by the IKF Development Committee. In the meeting, IKF Development and Education Committee Chair Jorge Alves (POR) announced that preceding both championships, education activities for coaching and refereeing will be organised so that the presence of countries can be leveraged.

The meeting also confirmed the composition of the highly important IKF Africa Development and Education Committee. The IKF Africa DEC’s Vice-Chair will be Mr Anthony Amekudzi (GHA), and he will be joined on the committee by three very successful korfball developers on the continent, namely Mr Eric Abale (CIV), Mrs Sophie Kathewera (MAW), and Ms Ilham Teidj (MAR).

IKF President Jan Fransoo attended the meeting and guided the proceedings. He wished all newly elected officials good luck and lots of success in the execution of their important responsibilities.

IKF Asia-Oceania Korfball Championship allocated to Korfball Association of Thailand

The IKF Council is happy to announce the host, location and dates for the IKF Asia-Oceania Korfball Championship 2022. The hosting of this event has been awarded to the Korfball Association of Thailand (KAT). The KAT became an official IKF Member in 2019, and has shown tremendous development of korfball in Thailand in recent years, despite the challenging circumstances due to the pandemic. Their efforts to promote and develop korfball in Thailand lead to the awarding of the IKF World Korfball Award – Best Grassroots Development in 2019.

The IKF Council is confident that KAT will do a great job hosting the 11th edition of the IKF Asia-Oceania Korfball Championship 2022. The event will be held in Pattaya City, in the Chonburi Province, from 28 November – 4 December.

All National Federations from Asia and Oceania will receive the invitation letter and entry forms for this event later this week.

All updates of the IKF Asia-Oceania Korfball Championship 2022 will be published on the event page.

IKF Playing Rules 2022

The IKF Playing Rules Committee has published the IKF Playing Rules 2022, which can be found here.

Two years after the last update to “The Rules of Korfball”, most of the feedback received about the changes made has been very positive. The simple presentation of the rules was appreciated, as well as the elimination of rules that no longer made sense in the context of modern korfball. Therefore, there are just some minor adjustments to the published text this year, without changing any rules or game regulations except the one mentioned below.

Due to the experiments conducted in Belgium, Czech Republic, England, Hong Kong China, and The Netherlands during national competitions, the IKF has decided to make a change in the way korfball matches are conducted. To improve the quality of the game and to facilitate the refereeing, after receiving very positive reports of the experiments made, it was decided that from the 1st of September onwards, instead of having one referee and one assistant referee, the matches will be conducted by two referees with the same power and duties in the match.

NED and BEL will play the final of the IKF U19 World Korfball Championship 2022

The second day of the IKF U19 World Korfball Championship 2022 has ended with the following results and discovering which teams will play for a medal in this great event that is taking place from 15 to 17 April 2022 in the Czech city of Kutná Hora.

ikf_u19_wkc_2022_day2_final_results_korfball

The big final will be played by the Netherlands and Belgium this Sunday, April 17, at 15:00, following the Bronze medal game between Germany and Chinese Taipei at 13:30. These last two teams had to play very hard on their quarter-final matches this morning.

England faced Germany in the best way possible and they fighted until the end trying to reach a place in one of the semi-finals. On the other hand, the big surprise was the endurance and resilience of the Catalan team against the Chinese Taipei squad during the whole match. It was not an easy win for the Asians, but a great game for all spectators who attended this game on hall 2.

The two evening semi-finals were very different. The Dutch team defeated Germany very easily from the very beginning. And today’s last game between the Belgian and Chinese Taipei became one of the best games of the championship so far. Intensity, lots of goals, emotion, passion, good korfball actions and all the things we love in such an important and decisive duels like this.

The Round Robin for places 9-13 started today with several interesting matches. This is a full and intense competition between Slovakia, Malaysia, Hungary, Poland and Morocco that will be decided tomorrow morning.

We invite you continue following this fantastic tournament. All supporters and visitors are welcome to enjoy live this event at the sports hall following all the hygienic and local protocols. And korfball fans around the world can also watch and follow this event on IKF’s data website: www.worldkorfball.sport (live games, play-by-play, all results and scorers, statistics, etc.).
